The Western Conference champs are taking on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/giannis-antetokounmpo-joined-number-highly-exclusive-clubs-dominating-performance-game-3-nba-finals\/\">Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one can predict how his career would have played out, but there is a chance Paul could be in the other locker room in this series if Paul\u2019s draft night had gone a little differently. The Bucks held the first overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft and, although many considered Paul the best player, the franchise took Utah center Andrew Bogut No. 1.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chris-paul-was-the-best-player-in-the-2005-nba-draft\"><strong>Chris Paul was the best player in the 2005 NBA draft<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The 2005 NBA Draft | A Look Back\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R9hfIZlLMV0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul hails from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and attended nearby Wake Forest to play college hoops. In his two seasons as a Demon Deacon, Paul dominated the ACC. He put up 18.0 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in his career and was a first-team consensus All-American as a sophomore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul left school after his second season at Wake and declared for the 2005 NBA draft. That draft class included four players thought to be surefire NBA stars. In addition to Paul and Bogut, North Carolina forward Marvin Williams and Illinois point guard Deron Williams were in that group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/episode-one-hundred-thirty-six\/id1461475047?i=1000529056333\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Mystery Crate podcast<\/em><\/a>\u00a0on the Dan Le Batard &amp; Friends network,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/infamous-nba-draft-bust-darko-milicic-argued-better-than-lebron-james\/\">ESPN draft insider Chad Ford<\/a>\u00a0went back into his notes from that draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says that \u201csize was by far the biggest issue\u201d with the 6-foot guard. Then-Bucks GM Larry Harris says the organization leaned toward Bogut over Paul because the team already had four guards they liked on the roster: T.J. Ford, Charlie Bell, Mo Williams, and\u00a0Michael Redd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing that won the Bucks over, though, was Bogut\u2019s approach to the draft process. Prior to the draft, Bogut\u2019s agent, David Bauman, came up with the idea to approach the draft process like an interview at a \u201cbig-time bank or prestigious law firm.\u201d Bogut explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We put together a strategy of showing up to these draft workouts and meetings as a business interview. My agent helped me, and we drew up a resume, full-on like it was a job interview. So, when I showed up for the meetings with both teams, with the GMs and the owners, I put a prepared resume out on the table for them to read. I showed up in a suit and tie and treated it as a job interview.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This tact especially impressed the then-governor of the Bucks, Herb Kohl. Bogut\u2019s professionalism and snappy dressing blew away the U.S. Senator and businessman who started Kohl\u2019s department store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he had seen players wear suits in draft interviews, Harris says the \u201cresume thing\u201d was something he\u2019d never seen before. This \u201cCorporate America strategy sealed the deal\u201d for Bogut to the Bucks, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ranking-3-players-taken-ahead-chris-paul-2005-nba-draft\/\">Paul fell to No. 4<\/a>\u00a0and the New Orleans\/Oklahoma City Hornets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bucks-missed-out-on-one-of-the-best-point-guards-of-all-time\"><strong>The Bucks missed out on one of the best point guards of all time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Happy 36th Birthday Chris Paul!<br><br>He&#39;s top 5 all-time in assists and steals.<br><br>One of the best point guards of ALL-TIME. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RnzTz6FL43\">pic.twitter.com\/RnzTz6FL43<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CBS Sports HQ (@CBSSportsHQ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSportsHQ\/status\/1390292266250604545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By any metric (outside of Larry O\u2019Brien trophies), Chris Paul is one of the best point guards of all time. He was the 2005-06 NBA Rookie of the Year and an 11-time All-Star. He has 10 All-NBA teams and nine All-Defensive teams under his belt as well. He\u2019s led the league in assists three times and in steals five times too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is the NBA\u2019s active leader in assists (10,275), assists per game (9.4), steals (2,332), and steals per game (2.1). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul also ranks 44th in all-time NBA Defensive Win Shares, but third in this category for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-tall-chris-paul-height-compare-other-point-guards\/\">players 6-foot-1 or shorter<\/a>. His offensive contributions are even better. He ranks 10th all-time in Win Shares and second, only behind John Stockton, for shorter players.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these numbers, Paul has helped define the last generation of the NBA. He led the transition of the Hornets (now Pelicans) franchise from Oklahoma City to New Orleans, and he captained one of the most exciting teams of the last two decades, the Lob City Clippers.
