They sometimes must criticize athletes or get them to say something controversial, and then they have to see these often-amped-up physical specimens after the fact. This is what happened with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/peyton-manning-didnt-talk-dan-patrick-4-years-after-host-questioned-98-million-contract\/\">host Dan Patrick<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alex-rodriguez-got-bombed-threw-up-streets-new-york-after-learning-dream-trade-boston-red-sox-nixed-mlbpa\/\">star baseball player Alex Rodriguez<\/a> in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick told Ryen Russillo a gripping story about why, to this day, Rodriguez doesn\u2019t like him. It involves a dig at Derek Jeter, a visit to the locker room with a de facto bodyguard, the possibility of a physical confrontation, and three '90s MLB All-Stars sitting on a couch, waiting to see what happened next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alex-rodriguez-got-mad-at-dan-patrick-in-the-early-2000s\"><strong>Alex Rodriguez got mad at Dan Patrick in the early 2000s<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On this day in 2000, Alex Rodr\u00edguez signed a a ten-year deal with the Rangers worth $252 million, at the time the richest contract in sports history<\/p>&mdash; Baseball Reference (@baseball_ref) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/baseball_ref\/status\/1337576661877927940?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 12, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After seven years with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ken-griffey-jr-and-sr-hitting-back-to-back-home-runs-is-still-the-coolest-father-son-moment-in-sports-history\/\">Seattle Mariners<\/a>, Alex Rodriguez became a free agent in 2000. The Miami native spurned his first club and signed with the Texas Rangers for a then-record 10 years and $252 million.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was at a time when Rodriguez, Derek Jeter in New York, and Nomar Garciaparra in Boston were fighting it out to see who was the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/jeter-a-rod-or-nomar-which-shortstop-of-the-mid-90s-was-the-best-infielder\/\">best shortstop of the generation<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Patrick shared a story of an interview he did with Rodriguez on\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/post-title-media-lunacy-plus-dan-patrick\/id1433966613?i=1000529675695\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Ryen Russillo Podcast<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and how it almost led to a serious physical fight between the broadcaster and the major leaguer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez joined Patrick during this era on his then-ESPN radio show and, as Patrick explained, \u201cI start talking to you right away.\u201d The host\u2019s interview style involved questions off the bat with no small talk, so as soon as he connected with Rodriguez, Patrick asked, \u201cSo what\u2019d you think of Jeter\u2019s contract?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not one thing he does better than me,\u201d Rodriguez answered. A brief time later, he asked Patrick, \u201cAre we recording?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick answered in the affirmative, and the interview continued without incident. The shortstop\u2019s answer was massive news, especially in Jeter\u2019s home city, according to DP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometime later, Patrick requested an interview with Rodriguez. A Rangers PR person initially said it wouldn\u2019t be an issue. He called the broadcaster back, though, and said, \u201cUmmm, Alex\u2019s got a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick decided the best way to remedy the situation was to meet Rodriguez in the locker room to address the problem. You would have thought Mike Lamb was Deep Throat at Watergate, that he was listening to every word, and it was so intense, and he was making me wait.<\/p><cite>Dan Patrick on Alex Rodriguez<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With the contingent of Rangers All-Stars \u201con the back of a couch\u201d who \u201cknew something\u2019s going down\u201d and A.Rod making Patrick sweat, the former\u00a0<em>SportsCenter<\/em>\u00a0host turned to the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Dibble. \u201cLook, if he hits me...\u201d Patrick started before Dibble interrupted and said, \u201cI got your back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When A.Rod finally made his way over, Patrick asked if Rodriguez had a problem with him. A.Rod explained he was mad about \u201cthe Jeter stuff.\u201d Patrick said he defended his journalistic integrity around the interview. He then described the tense moments that followed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>He got so close to me, and I was like, \u2018Oh, you gotta be kidding me. This guy\u2019s gonna deck me in front of his teammates in his locker room? And then I got Dibble that\u2019s gonna come in and pound A.Rod?\u2019<\/p><cite>Dan Patrick on Alex Rodriguez<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick then started going through the possible next-day headlines in his head such as, \u201cTV Talking Hairdo Gets Decked in Rangers Locker Room\u201d and \u201cA.Rod on DL after Rob Dibble \u2014 \u201cNasty Boy\u201d \u2014 Breaks His Jaw.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funniest part of the whole event was the big-name Rangers stars watching in anticipation. \u201cI can see the Rangers over here \u2014 these cowards over here \u2014 and they\u2019re looking, and they\u2019re\u00a0<em>waiting<\/em>,\u201d Patrick shared. \u201cAnd I went, \u2018I\u2019ll be damned. He was threatening me, I thought, and I had some choice words back. Basically, it was like, \u2018hey, f&#8212; you, man. You said these things. I didn\u2019t feel this way.\u2019 And I almost reached back to see if I could feel Dibble because I thought, \u201cGod, if he left, I\u2019m in trouble!\u2019<\/p><cite>Dan Patrick on Alex Rodriguez<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The host never needed Dibble\u2019s muscle, and cooler heads ultimately prevailed. However, Patrick and Rodriguez still aren\u2019t on good terms around two decades later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a good relationship now,\u201d Patrick admitted. \u201cI\u2019ve seen him, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Hey. Hi, Alex. How are you?\u2019 And that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick explained his going to see A.Rod was a vestige from his early reporting days. He said he was always taught, \u201cIf you say something, show up in the locker room. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is a noble sentiment that any young journalist can learn from.
