He became a champion thanks to his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-was-so-competitive-turned-autograph-signing-into-race\/\">fabled competitive drive<\/a>. That will to win started early for Bird, dating back to at least his high school days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Legend demonstrated his competitive fire in 2015 when he told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alex-rodriguez-dan-patrick-almost-brawled-rangers-locker-room-jose-canseco-sat-couch-watched\/\">radio host Dan Patrick<\/a>\u00a0that missed free throws from a high school teammate still bother him 40-plus years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-bird-grew-up-in-french-lick-indiana\"><strong>Larry Bird grew up in French Lick, Indiana<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Larry Bird&#39;s high school portrait from 1974 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/stud?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#stud<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/rM4ddWXf\">pic.twitter.com\/rM4ddWXf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; SI Vault (@si_vault) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/si_vault\/status\/262951913992122368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 29, 2012<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird\u2019s most famous nickname comes from his hometown. Throughout his career in Boston, the publically-reserved Indiana native was known as the \u201cHick from French Lick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The all-time great grew up in French Lick, Indiana, a tiny town with a current population of 1,777, per\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/search-results.html?searchType=web&amp;cssp=SERP&amp;q=French%20Lick%20town,%20IN\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>. It is in rural Southern Indiana, about 100 miles southeast of Indianapolis and 60 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-made-24-million-in-the-nba-but-never-forgot-his-poor-childhood-in-french-lick\/\">Bird grew up poor<\/a>\u00a0in this sparsely populated area, and, to this day, the median household income in French Lick is just $37,377. Almost 20% of the town still lives below the poverty line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason Bird got out is because of his incredible basketball skills. The first time a wider audience got a look at the future superstar was in the famed Indiana High School Basketball Tournament. The state-wide tournament,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-6-greatest-basketball-movies-of-all-time\/\">made famous by the movie\u00a0<em>Hoosiers<\/em><\/a>, allowed all schools, even Bird\u2019s tiny Springs Valley High School, to compete against the biggest teams in the state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bird-and-his-hometown-are-still-mad-about-his-high-school-teammate-s-missed-shots\"><strong>Bird (and his hometown) are still mad about his high school teammate\u2019s missed shots<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Larry Bird on The Dan Patrick Show (Full Interview) 07\/27\/2015\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o56BffdgoH0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, Bird was an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/if-the-la-lakers-win-the-2020-nba-finals-they-owe-a-big-thank-you-to-larry-bird\/\">executive for the Indiana Pacers<\/a>. He joined\u00a0<em>The Dan Patrick Show<\/em>\u00a0to discuss the Pacers' special edition Hickory High uniforms from the 1986 film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick asked Bird to explain the \u201c<em>Hoosiers<\/em> phenomenon.\u201d Bird started describing his experience as a young player in the tournament but couldn\u2019t help throwing his high school teammate under the bus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The dream was to be good enough to play against the big schools, and that\u2019s what we tried to do. We tried to maybe be good enough to maybe have an opportunity one day to play against the Crispus Attucks or Jeffersonville or New Albany, but, unfortunately, I played with a kid that kept missing free throws at the end of the game, and we didn\u2019t get there.<\/p><cite>Larry Bird on <em>The Dan Patrick Show<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The host burst out in laughter and asked if the other teams were implementing a \u201cHack-a-Shaq\u201d strategy back in the \u201970s. \u201cWell, with my point guard, he got a little nervous, and they knew it, and so they started fouling him,\u201d Bird explained. \u201cAnd we just didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not over it, are you?\u201d Patrick guessed. \u201cNever!\u201d Bird exclaimed. \u201cA loss is a loss, and [it was] a big loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just Bird who held onto these feelings over the ensuing decades. People in his town remembered it as well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>You know what\u2019s funny? This earned him a scholarship to play for the jewel of Indiana basketball, Bobby Knight\u2019s Indiana Hoosiers, per\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/history\/legends\/profiles\/larry-bird\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBA.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after just a month on campus in Bloomington, he left. The future NBA MVP enrolled in Northwood Institute Junior College and then at Indiana State. It was here, at a school that finished with a 12-14 record the previous two seasons, that Bird\u2019s legend grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.6 steals per game in his three seasons as a Sycamore. In his last year, he led the small-school team to the No. 1 ranking in the county and the finals of the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/we-can-thank-larry-bird-and-magic-johnsons-1979-finals-clash-for-march-madness\/\">1979 NCAA Tournament Final<\/a>, Bird and the Sycamores ran into a Michigan State team led by a point guard named Ervin \u201cMagic\u201d Johnson. The Big 10 squad overpowered the small school and won the National Championship 75-64.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would be the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-famous-rivalry-with-magic-johnson-included-trash-talk\/\">iconic Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird games<\/a>, but certainly not the last.
