Leonard <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kawhi-leonard-decided-clippers-future\/\">opted out of the final year<\/a> of the deal he signed with the Clippers in 2019. LA was the favorite to retain him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as other free agents flew off the board as soon as the negotiating period opened on Aug. 2, Leonard waited. It is like <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kawhi-leonard-goodbye-to-the-raptors-most-kawhi-way-possible\/\">what he did in 2019<\/a> when he was one of the last high-profile free agents to sign. While superstar free agents Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving quickly committed to the Brooklyn Nets, Jimmy Butler headed to South Beach, and Kemba Walker chose Boston, Leonard was deliberate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He talked to both LA teams, and he listened to the Raptors\u2019 pitch. Days went by with no movement from Leonard. It wasn\u2019t until July 6, 2019, that the Clippers got a commitment from Leonard. They only got it after <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nba-paul-george-makes-bold-claim-about-pairing-up-with-kawhi-leonard\/\">agreeing to acquire Paul George<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nba-masai-ujiris-bold-stance-about-raptors-after-kawhi-leonards-departure\/\">plight of the Raptors<\/a>, some of the talent drain happened because the president of basketball operations, Masai Ujiri, kept his powder dry. But while he waited for a train that never came, the market dried up. That\u2019s a situation from which the Lakers can recover. According to Ramona Shelburne of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/insider\/story\/_\/id\/31937985\/how-two-phone-calls-two-years-apart-led-los-angeles-lakers-landing-russell-westbrook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a>, Leonard pitted two LA natives against each other. He spoke to Westbrook about joining him with the Clippers. Then he told George he\u2019d rather play with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kendrick Perkins, also of ESPN, put Leonard on full blast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cKawhi Leonard is a guy that throws stones and hides his hand. We have been letting him off the hook for too long, and he\u2019s the guy that flies under the radar and has been doing sneaky stuff. Just because he\u2019s Kawhi, we don\u2019t address it.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at this situation with him and Russell Westbrook. This is supposed to be a homie; this is a confidential conversation. You don\u2019t use this information or ignore this brother\u2019s call to lure Paul George to come to the Clippers. Let LeBron James do some stuff like that and watch out. People going to (the media) and kill him.\u201d<\/p><cite>Kawhi Leonard<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonard got some criticism in 2017\u201318 when he maintained his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/21520710\/gregg-popovich-san-antonio-spurs-says-never-encountered-issue-kawhi-leonard-quadriceps-injury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quad injury was too severe<\/a> for him to play for the San Antonio Spurs. After appearing in only nine games, San Antonio <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/why-did-kawhi-leonard-hide-from-spurs-staff-members-who-were-looking-for-him-before-requesting-a-trade\/\">dealt Leonard to the Raptors<\/a> the following offseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven-time NBA champion Robert Horry told ESPN\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPNNBA\/status\/1423385392095670274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Jump<\/a> <\/em>that he agreed with Perkins for a different reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAs a Clipper fan, I would be mad at Kawhi. The sides were still hammering out the terms. Leonard\u2019s decision came on the fifth day of the free agency period and just after the moratorium on making deals official has expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is at least <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kawhi-leonard-could-miss-entire-2021-22-season\/\">partially damaged goods<\/a> at this point. Leonard had surgery to repair a partially torn ACL in July. Without a timetable for his return, the assumption is he will miss at least a significant chunk of next season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Clippers have had a quiet free agency period to this point. They did agree to re-sign veteran Nicolas Batum and have reportedly come to terms to keep Reggie Jackson, who revived his career in the playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question Leonard is one of the elite two-way players in the NBA. He\u2019s a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and has made seven All-Defensive teams in his 10-year career to go with five All-NBA berths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he gives off a \u201cme-first\u201d vibe, especially in light of the latest reports. Availability is a crucial ability for an athlete, and Kawhi Leonard consistently comes up short there. Perkins is right.
