Before <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ranking-the-5-players-taken-ahead-of-larry-bird-in-the-1978-nba-draft\/\">entering the NBA draft in 1978<\/a> out of Indiana State, Bird figured he would wind up pouring concrete as a construction worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-bird-s-legendary-nba-career\">Larry Bird's legendary NBA career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Larry Bird&#039;s top 10 moments with the Boston Celtics | SportsCenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RbcrDjxt18g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird earned the nickname Larry Legend for a good reason. The Boston Celtics great played 13 seasons in the NBA and finished his career as arguably one of the five best players to ever suit up in the league.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of his incredible career, Bird averaged 24.3 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Celtics. He shot 49.6% from the field and 37.6% from three, and he led the league in free throw percentage in four different seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 13 years with the Celtics, Bird made 12 All-Star appearances, 10 All-NBA Teams, and three All-Defensive Teams. The star forward <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-hitchhiked-to-bar-after-winning-1984-nba-title-refused-to-let-driver-join\/\">won three NBA titles<\/a>, three MVP awards, and two Finals MVPs. Bird has a spotless resume filled with accolades and NBA records. He was so dominant that he earned a scholarship to play at Indiana University in 1974, but he didn't have an easy time adjusting to a bigger town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Bird dropped out of school shortly after joining the Indiana basketball team. After returning to French Lick and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-may-have-stayed-a-garbage-man-if-not-for-a-man-named-bill-hodges\/\">working as a garbage man<\/a> for a year, Bird enrolled at Indiana State to restart his basketball career. He became such a huge star there that he grew into a top draft prospect, and he went No. 6 overall in the 1978 NBA Draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before making it to the NBA, Bird figured he would end up as a construction worker. At least, that's what he told Dan Shaughnessy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2021\/11\/09\/magazine\/time-larry-bird-hustled-me-out-160-other-celtics-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Boston Globe<\/em><\/a> in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>When I was at [Indiana] State, finishing to get my degree, they had me teaching special needs kids in a high school. That was tough. It gave me a lot of respect for people who do that.<\/p><p>I thought I\u2019d wind up being a construction worker, pouring concrete. I wasn\u2019t very good at shop in school, but I\u2019d been around construction. He never expected to see fame and fortune when he grew up, but he quickly found out he had a special talent on the basketball court. That talent eventually brought him <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-birds-mother-couldnt-comprehend-her-sons-15-million-deal-boston-celtics-yet-she-remained-just-like-him\/\">impressive riches<\/a> and a Hall of Fame plaque, but he would've been just as happy working construction and living a simple life in his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But pouring concrete wouldn't have helped Bird build up a $75 million net worth.
