His humble beginnings at Indiana State and his battle with Magic Johnson are nearly as epic. But it's often forgotten Larry Legend began his college career at Indiana University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird was briefly a member of the Hoosiers under Bob Knight. His time in Bloomington didn't last long, though, for several reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those reasons was Kent Benson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-bird-and-kent-benson-were-teammates-at-indiana\">Larry Bird and Kent Benson were teammates at Indiana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Complete Compilation of Larry Bird&#039;s Greatest Stories Told By NBA Players &amp; Legends PART 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Kq53Shq1js?start=15&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird was a great high school basketball player. But he was shy and poorer than all his teammates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That immediately caused a disconnect between the future Hall of Famer and his Hoosier brethren. Even his lead recruiter at Indiana, Dave Bliss, couldn't form a real relationship with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/more-sports\/2009\/03\/04\/march-mad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SI.com<\/a>, the only personal information Bird ever shared with Bliss was his favorite hobby of mushroom hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Larry's early days under Knight, the future Celtic scrimmaged against older players. Bird thought some of those Hoosier veterans mistreated him &#8212; Benson being the worst offender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benson was a 6-foot-10 center who was eventually drafted No. 1 overall by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/milwaukee-bucks\/\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> in 1977. He became an average player in the league.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, though, The Hick from French Lick was better than average. Almost every point came against Bird's former Hoosier teammate. The three-time MVP made a point of tossing the ball inside to McHale over, and over, and over again, letting him destroy Benson, according to a story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/page2\/story?page=simmons\/040720&amp;num=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, Larry wanted to make Benson look so bad he had no problem letting <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-kevin-mchale-took-confidence-highest-level\/\">McHale do the work<\/a>. He led the Celtics to three championships, won three MVP Awards, and was named to 10 All-NBA teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Bird is known for his trash talk almost as much as he's known for his talent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benson is just one example of a slight the Spring Valley High School alum took personally and used to obliterate his opponent.
