His grit and never-give-up attitude made him a beloved figure at every stop along the way, and nothing illustrated that better than when he suffered a career-ending knee injury during his final season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/miami-heat\/\">Miami Heat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mourning knew immediately that it would be the last time he would step on an NBA court, so he refused to let a stretcher carry him off into retirement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alonzo-mourning-knew-his-career-was-over-the-second-he-injured-his-knee-in-2007\">Alonzo Mourning knew his career was over the second he injured his knee in 2007<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alonzo Mourning Top 10 Plays of his Career\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/buX2Ml4qTxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the 2007-08 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alonzo-mourning-nba-all-star-game-with-prince-in-minneapolis\/\">Mourning's NBA career<\/a> was on its last legs. He was 37 years old at the time and playing just about 15 minutes per game for the Heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the 25th game of the season, his career abruptly ended before he had a chance to say goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a game against the Atlanta Hawks, Mourning went up to block a shot and landed awkwardly on his way down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When I planted I felt like my foot slipped,&#8221; Mourning said after the game, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/news\/story?id=3162228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a>. &#8220;It happened so fast though. It really did. I didn't even watch the tape. From what everybody else told me that was watching it, they said it looked like I slipped.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mourning realized his career was over that day while lying on the ground in pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We tried to help him up and he just said, &#8216;It's over, it's over,'&#8221; his teammate, Udonis Haslem said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mourning was right. He had torn the patellar tendon in his right knee, and that would be the final time he suited up in an NBA uniform. I've been through so much in my life. If I had to crawl off the court I would have. Nobody was going to push me off on a stretcher off the court.
