But finding out you\u2019ve been fired from <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/motorsports\/\">NASCAR<\/a> via Twitter while waiting in the Taco Bell drive-thru isn\u2019t an ideal situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hendrick-motorsports-hasn-t-always-been-home-for-alex-bowman\">Hendrick Motorsports hasn\u2019t always been home for Alex Bowman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Alex-Bowman.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Alex Bowman speaks to the media during media day at Daytona on Feb. 16, 2022 in Daytona Beach, Florida. | James Gilbert\/Getty Images\" width=\"1200\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alex Bowman speaks to the media during media day at Daytona on Feb. 16, 2022 in Daytona Beach, Florida. | James Gilbert\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Bowman was a relatively little-known driver when he landed with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/would-alex-bowman-hendrick-motorsports-other-driver-take-out-joe-gibbs-racing-championship-4-competitor-aid-teammates\/\">Hendrick Motorsports<\/a> in 2016. Before that, Bowman arrived in the Cup Series in 2014 with BK Racing and 2015 with Tommy Baldwin Racing. Neither organization was championship material, and Bowman\u2019s best showing was 13<sup>th<\/sup> place in the Daytona summer race as a rookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time that some people took notice came in 2016 when he caught on with Hendrick Motorsports and replaced Dale Earnhardt Jr. for most of the second half of the season while Earnhardt dealt with lingering concussion-related problems. Bowman won the pole at Phoenix in the No. 88 Chevy, and sixth place there was his best finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bowman, 29, has carved out a nice career since. He scored his first top-five showing at Bristol in 2018 and his initial victory at Chicagoland Speedway the following season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bowman is up to seven victories, including Las Vegas this season. He won four times a year ago but fell short of getting into the Championship 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alex Bowman\u2019s breakup with Tommy Baldwin was awkward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alex Bowman wins at Martinsville, Denny Hamlin prevents him from burnout | Motorsports on NBC\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jTOI3KNzkLQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Bowman told <a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/1640774\/2020\/03\/04\/12-questions-with-alex-bowman-2020-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Athletic<\/a> in 2020 that he\u2019d never had a chance to tell the full story of his departure from Tommy Baldwin Racing. That\u2019s too bad. It\u2019s a doozy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bowman finished 33<sup>rd<\/sup> in points in the 2015 NASCAR Cup Series. He thought he was set for a return the following season when a veteran reporter texted him in January 2016 to ask if his arrangement was indeed solid. After he answered in the affirmative, the reporter responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was like, \u2018OK, I just wanted to make sure,\u2019 which was kind of weird,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In retrospect, Bowman should have known. A day earlier, owner Tommy Baldwin called to cancel him out of an event at which the driver was going to represent the team. With his schedule cleared for that day, Bowman thought it would be a good idea to spend time at the team shop in Mooresville. On the way, he stopped for lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou get off Exit 36 in Mooresville, and there\u2019s a Taco Bell. So, I\u2019m in the Taco Bell drive-thru line, and I refresh Twitter, and boom! There it is. I\u2019m fired.<\/p>\n<cite> Alex Bowman <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>His calls to the team went unanswered, so Bowman thought better of showing up at the shop in case the tweets were legitimate. A couple of hours later, the driver\u2019s manager delivered the bad news that he'd confirmed the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epilogue: The driver finally caught up with his ex-boss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Back with the &#039;Hack&#039;: Alex Bowman &#039;Backs into&#039; Stacking Pennies with Corey LaJoie\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TmssNSOa4LU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Driver Alex Bowman never got to hear directly from Tommy Baldwin in the days and weeks after his firing to find out what was behind the decision. Plenty of people involuntarily separated (how\u2019s that for human resources lingo?) have had a similar experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As luck would have it, Bowman took a date to a local sushi bar several weeks later and encountered his former boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI walked in, and the first people right there at the bar were Beth (Baldwin\u2019s wife) and Tommy.
