As <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/hockey\/\">hockey<\/a> fans will remember, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry were one of those iconic pairings. For what seemed like an eternity, the two men were a fixture on <em>Hockey Night in Canada<\/em>. The evening wasn't complete without &#8220;Coach's Corner,&#8221; where Cherry would say whatever was on his mind as MacLean tried to keep the segment moving along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything, however, changed in November 2019. Cherry, who was no stranger to controversial comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-happened-to-don-cherry-after-he-lost-his-job-on-hockey-night-in-canada\/\">crossed a line ahead of Remembrance Day and was removed from the program<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those events did more than take Cherry off the air, though. Ron MacLean's subsequent apology apparently ended any chance of friendship between the duo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-cherry-didn-t-back-down-from-his-2019-comments-but-ron-maclean-did-apologize-for-his-role\">Don Cherry didn't back down from his 2019 comments, but Ron MacLean did apologize for his role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ron MacLean addresses Don Cherry firing on Hockey Night in Canada\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eNMp9ad2WGU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As long-time <em>Hockey Night In Canada<\/em> viewers will tell you, Don Cherry has spoken about Remembrance Day poppies on several different occasions. In 2019, however, he produced the straw that broke the camel's back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The 85-year-old\u00a0<em>Hockey Night in Canada<\/em>\u00a0personality said on Saturday on his weekly Coach's Corner segment\u00a0that he's less frequently seeing people wearing poppies anymore to honour fallen Canadian soldiers, and he singled out those he believes are immigrants in Toronto, prompting a swift online backlash,&#8221; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/don-cherry-sparks-online-backlash-1.5354835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBC<\/a> story from the time explained. &#8220;&#8216;You people \u2026 you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,' Cherry said. &#8216;These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following day, MacLean took to Twitter and apologized for failing to intervene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring last night\u2019s broadcast, Don made comments that were hurtful and prejudiced and I wish I had handled myself differently. It was a divisive moment and I am truly upset with myself for allowing it,\u201d he wrote, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6151647\/don-cherry-immigrants-poppies\/\">Global News<\/a>. \u201cI have worked with Don for 30 years, and we both love hockey. But last night, I know we failed you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The host also began the next day's <em>Hometown Hockey<\/em> broadcast by speaking directly to the audience about what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Don Cherry made remarks which were hurtful, discriminatory, which were flat out wrong,&#8221; MacLean explained (h\/t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/ca\/nhl\/news\/ron-maclean-apologizes-for-don-cherrys-immigrant-comments-during-hnic-broadcast\/r8dfiol0d0xr1som6tlly1jy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sporting News<\/a>).\u00a0&#8220;We at Sportsnet have apologized. It certainly doesn't stand for what Sportsnet or Rogers [Communications] represents. We know diversity is the strength of the country. We see it in travels with our show and with Hockey Night in Canada. I owe you an apology, too:\u00a0that's the big thing I want to emphasize.\u00a0I sat there, did not catch it, did not respond.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cherry, for his part, didn't back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know what I said, and I meant it,&#8221; he told Joe Warrington of the <a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/local-news\/warmington-don-cherry-fired-over-controversial-poppy-comment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toronto Sun<\/a> after losing his job. &#8220;Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That apology has apparently ended any chance of friendship between MacLean and Cherry <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hockey Night in Canada is not near as good without \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoachsCornerDC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CoachsCornerDC<\/a>\u2069 \u2014 people miss hearing what Don Cherry has to say. So \u2066<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ernestdoroszuk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ernestdoroszuk<\/a>\u2069 and I did our own Cherry\u2019s Corner. A mending of fences between his sidekick who took cover to protect his own career not likely <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hhdOgwB5Wn\">pic.twitter.com\/hhdOgwB5Wn<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Joe Warmington (@joe_warmington) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joe_warmington\/status\/1526353095306924032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 17, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to Cherry's departure from Hockey Night in Canada, he and MacLean had been working together for what felt like forever. These days, though, the former coach doesn't think he can ever rebuild the bond they once shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ll ever be friends again,\u201d Cherry told Warrington in a clip of a recent interview shared on social media. &#8220;No, you can\u2019t be friends ... No \u2026 It\u2019s too bad because we were together for, we were on there every... and we used to have fun and the whole thing. It was fun. Coach's Corner was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fairness to the 88-year-old, though, <a href=\"https:\/\/jwp.io\/s\/SZKsw7L9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a longer video<\/a> of the conversation explained that he doesn't exactly hold a grudge against MacLean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I really do believe in the Lord,&#8221; Cherry explained. &#8220;And the Lord said, you know, &#8216;Forgive, forget.' I do believe that. I don't know, I don't think I can ever forget, though. Tougher to me. But I don't have any animosity toward him.&#8221; Those comments were then followed by the line about never being friends again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there you have it, straight from the man himself.
