To most, that is the definition of a dynasty. However, for NBA historian (and noted Celtics fan) Bill Simmons, that term doesn't apply to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/stephen-curry\/\">Stephen Curry<\/a>, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Steve Kerr, and the Warriors for some reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-six-finals-appearances-and-four-championships-in-eight-seasons-isn-t-a-dynasty-to-bill-simmons\"><strong>Six Finals appearances and four championships in eight seasons isn't a dynasty to Bill Simmons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New BS Podcast w\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HousefromDC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HousefromDC<\/a> \u2014 the Warriors won the 2022 NBA title (and we went to the game and had some thoughts).<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s1T6QLJZE2\">https:\/\/t.co\/s1T6QLJZE2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bill Simmons (@BillSimmons) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillSimmons\/status\/1537675138484805633?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after his beloved Boston Celtics walked off the court in defeat in Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals, Bills Simmons recorded an episode of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/an-impressive-warriors-title-currys-pantheon-jump\/id1043699613?i=1000566770708\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Bill Simmons Podcast<\/em><\/a> with his friend and regular guest Joe House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair had recently left TD Garden after watching Game 6 and discussed the game and the Golden State Warriors greater\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/stephen-curry-ranking-golden-state-warriors-superstar-5-greatest-nba-finals-performances\/\">place in NBA history<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Simmons laid out the impressive feats not seen since the San Antonio Spurs of the 2000s or the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s, he couched it by saying despite six NBA Finals appearances in eight seasons and four titles, &#8220;can't call it a dynasty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When House pushed back, asking why not? Simmons said, &#8220;It's just not. It's a run.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House then asked Simmons, if the Warriors aren't a dynasty, then &#8220;what's a dynasty?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It's a \u2014 Not that! It's not that! They had the second pick in the Lottery one of those years. They missed the playoffs last year. I think they're the team of the decade, though. I think that's what they get. Or they're team of their generation.<\/p><cite>Bill Simmons on the Golden State Warriors<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Simmons continued to explain that the Warriors are similar to the 1980s Celtics, who couldn't quite figure out the next step after the Larry Bird,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-good-was-joe-barry-carroll-the-centerpiece-of-the-trade-that-brought-robert-parish-and-kevin-mchale-to-the-boston-celtics\/\">Kevin McHale, Robert Parish years<\/a>\u00a0of dominance, or the Los Angeles Lakers with Vlade Divac and Sam Perkins next to Magic Johnson in the early 90s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Simmons' credit, he did (begrudgingly) admit that Magic's Lakers were &#8220;probably more of a dynasty&#8221; than his beloved Bird's Celtics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, as House asked, if not the Warriors, which teams are NBA dynasties?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The NBA Dynasties <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Frank Ramsey: 7\/13\/31-7\/8\/18: Red Auerbach built the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/celtics?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@celtics<\/a> dynasty piece by piece, beginning with Bob Cousy in 1950 followed by Bill Sharman in &#39;51, Frank Ramsey in &#39;54, Jim Loscutoff in &#39;55, Tom Heinsohn &amp; Bill Russell in &#39;56, Sam Jones in &#39;57 &amp; KC Jones\/Gene Conley in &#39;58. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RdHkz3zu9m\">pic.twitter.com\/RdHkz3zu9m<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NBA History (@NBAHistory) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBAHistory\/status\/1016110967539847170?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Bill Simmons never gave a concrete definition or number of titles\/Finals appearances that constitute a dynasty, most NBA fans know one when they see one.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Red Auerbach's\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wilt-chamberlain-won-the-battle-but-bill-russell-won-the-war-the-last-time-the-celtics-and-warriors-met-in-the-nba-finals\/\">Boston Celtics with Bill Russell<\/a>, John Havlicek, and Bob Cousy won 11 NBA championships and made 12 NBA Finals in 13 years, from 1956 to 1969. If there were a word more significant and more impressive than &#8220;dynasty,&#8221; this run would be cause for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 1970s, the Celtics (now under Tommy Heinsohn) won two more, but no other team won multiple titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Celtics and LA Lakers dominated the 1980s. Larry Bird and company won three and made five Finals appearances in seven years (save that fact).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/pat-riley-knew-perfect-3-words-piss-magic-johnson-off-inspire-him-win-1985-nba-finals-your-boy-larry\/\">Magic Johnson's crew<\/a>\u00a0went to eight Finals and won five in 10 seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There really can only be one dynasty per decade, and it was undoubtedly the Lakers in the '80s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1990s was a no-brainer. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson, and the Chicago Bulls were 6-0 in Finals over the course of eight NBA seasons. That's a dynasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich won five championships and made sic Finals over 14 seasons. That's incredibly impressive for longevity. However, from 2000 to 2010, the Lakers too often thwarted the Spurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With three titles and four Finals in five years, you can't quite call\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/former-lakers-coach-shares-1-key-way-kobe-bryant-was-like-mj-shaq-was-like-magic\/\">the Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson Lakers<\/a>\u00a0a dynasty. But, with five trophies and seven Finals in 11 years for Phil and Kobe, now &#8220;dynasty&#8221; comes into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are the Golden State Warriors a dynasty?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Golden-State-Warriors.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Andre Iguodala, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors pose for a photo after defeating the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game Six of the 2022 NBA Finals.\" class=\"wp-image-1515487\" \/><figcaption>Andre Iguodala, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors | Adam Glanzman\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In sports, a dynasty is a team that wins a lot of championships in a short amount of time. Sports dynasties are also usually defined by having a player, a coach, or a small core group of players and coaches throughout the entire run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By that definition, the 2014-2022 Warriors are, without a doubt, an NBA dynasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head coach Steve Kerr, who's been a part of a dynasty and a near-dynasty\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/western-conference-finals-was-steve-kerr-or-jason-kidd-better-nba-player\/\">as a player<\/a>\u00a0with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, has led the trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green to the Finals in all but two years of the last decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the Warriors did miss the playoffs in 2019-20 and 2020-21. However, Thompson missed the entire season, and Curry played just five games due to injury.
