The world\u2019s most glamorous racing series apparently wanted to remind the stock car community that theirs is a sport that matters in one country on one continent while F1 is truly international.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why they felt it needed to be said remains a head-scratcher. And why they couldn\u2019t wait one more week for their kickoff is another worthwhile question. But they put on quite the show on the famous Las Vegas Strip, four hours northwest of Phoenix Raceway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nascar-wrapped-up-its-season-in-phoenix-this-weekend\"><strong>NASCAR wrapped up its season in Phoenix this weekend<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LEWIS HAMILTON.<br><br>LAS VEGAS STRIP.<br><br>WOW. WOW. WOW!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LasVegasGP?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LasVegasGP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/F1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#F1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LewisHamilton?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LewisHamilton<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MSWUjd6xXY\">pic.twitter.com\/MSWUjd6xXY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Formula 1 (@F1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/F1\/status\/1589063576463249408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 6, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/joey-logano\/\">Joey Logano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/ty-gibbs\/\">Ty Gibbs<\/a>, and Zane Smith won at Phoenix Raceway to earn NASCAR season titles. The busy weekend also included announcements that Jimmie Johnson will return to NASCAR next season as a driver\/owner and Kyle Busch is moving his Craftsman Truck Series team to Chevy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also tragedy as Joe Gibbs Racing executive <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ty-gibbs-misses-season-ending-race-death-of-father\/\">Coy Gibbs died<\/a> just hours after watching his son win the Xfinity Series championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three days of memories will go a long way toward holding fans over for three months until the 2023 season kicks off with the return of the Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum, followed by the Daytona 500 two weeks later. In between, the NFL plays its Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASCAR wisely steers clear of racing on the NFL\u2019s big day. The Formula 1 folks had no such concerns about staging something opposite Championship 4 weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Formula 1 threw a party to remind Las Vegas it\u2019s coming \u2026 in a year<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Formula-1.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"A Formula 1 racing team car from Oracle Red Bull Racing burns out on the Las Vegas Strip during the Las Vegas Grand Prix launch party on Nov. 5, 2022. | Wade Vandervort \/ AFP via Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-1537199\" \/><figcaption>A Formula 1 racing team car from Oracle Red Bull Racing burns out on the Las Vegas Strip during the Las Vegas Grand Prix launch party on Nov. 5, 2022. | Wade Vandervort \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Formula 1 threw a launch party on Saturday in Las Vegas, which will be the site of an F1 race in November 2023. When it comes to glitz, the two are made for each other. It will be a must-watch regardless of whether there\u2019s anything at stake for the drivers and teams beyond one more podium finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F1 brought out some of its big guns, including <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/lewis-hamilton\/\">Lewis Hamilton<\/a> and Sergio Perez, who took drives on a short track on Las Vegas Boulevard. The real enormousness of what series owner Liberty Media is striving to build in returning racing to the city after a four-decade absence won\u2019t be apparent until next fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F1 will construct a 300,000-square-foot, four-story paddock building on 40 acres of prime land. Liberty Media reportedly is sinking half a billion dollars into Las Vegas and will own the local franchise in a departure from its traditional model of selling races to local entities for fees of between $15 million and $50 million annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to make a statement in Vegas because everything is so big,\u201d said Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/sports\/motor-sports\/formula-1\/fan-fest-paddock-plans-show-formula-ones-commitment-to-las-vegas-photos-2670840\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Las Vegas Review-Journal<\/a>. \u201cThis paddock building will be a sign of our long-term commitment to the Vegas community. It will serve as a year-round attraction to our fans and will be one of our most spectacular facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali: \u201cThis will be the F1 statement in Las Vegas. Its spring race in Miami and October event at Circuit of the Americas will continue to compete with NASCAR weekends, but the new race falls after the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/championship-4\/\">Championship 4<\/a> weekend. From that perspective, it isn\u2019t a threat to NASCAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Formula 1 cannot do in Las Vegas but NASCAR manages to do on all 36 race weekends is guarantee that there are championship implications. Formula 1 determines the World Drivers\u2019 Championship via points accumulated over the season. This year, Dutch sensation Max Verstappen clinched his second straight title on Oct. 9 in Japan in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of 22 scheduled races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That took some of the shine off the U.S. Grand Prix at COTA two weeks later, though the race weekend still attracted enormous crowds. The Las Vegas race next season is set for Nov. 18 as the next-to-last event on a 24-race calendar (two weeks after NASCAR\u2019s championship 4), and it\u2019s easy to foresee the championship having been decided long before then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Got a question or observation about racing?
