Every year, a new draft class brings in hundreds of players eager to make their gridiron dreams come true. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the reality is that most players <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/5-times-respected-nfl-quarterback-quietly-retired-without-fanfare\/\">have fairly short careers<\/a> due to the intense level of competition and physical toll of the sport &#8212; that's assuming they have any careers to speak of. Not everybody can be <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/tom-brady\/\">Tom Brady<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the rank-and-file player, being in the league when you turn 30 is an accomplishment in and of itself.\u00a0Here's more about the average age of retirement in the NFL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-average-nfl-career-is-not-very-long\">The average NFL career is not very long<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/investingfuse.com\/retirement\/average-retirement-age-for-nfl-football-players-by-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Investing Fuse<\/a>, the average NFL career lasts <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-long-is-the-average-nfl-career\/\">3.3 years<\/a>. The average age of players forced out of the game &#8212; being able to retire formally is a luxury many people don't get &#8212; is 27 years old. Both of these numbers are shorter than the same statistics for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-age-do-nba-players-retire-and-how-much-do-they-get-paid\/\">NBA<\/a> (five years, 28 years old), MLB (five years, 29.5 years old), and NHL (six years, 28.2 years old).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Quarterback Peyton Manning plans to announce he will retire from the NFL <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/brCBpBZc01\">https:\/\/t.co\/brCBpBZc01<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oWjWHwaU7o\">pic.twitter.com\/oWjWHwaU7o<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Newsweek (@Newsweek) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Newsweek\/status\/706551174560944129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Football is an extremely intense sport mentally and physically. So it makes sense that the positions with the longest career lengths are the ones with the most protection <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/worst-roughing-passer-calls-nfl-history\/\">from the sport's inherent violence<\/a>. Kickers and quarterbacks are the only positions with an average career span above four years. The shortest career span belongs to running backs, who average a mere 2.5 years in the NFL.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The league provides different <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/do-nfl-players-get-retirement-checks\/\">retirement plan benefits<\/a> for players, including a 401(k), severance plan, health reimbursement account (up to $350,000), pension plan, and annuity plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fully vested players are eligible for pension benefits once they turn 55 and fulfill certain requirements. Former players are also eligible for long-term care insurance from ages 50 to 75.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plenty-of-nfl-stars-have-left-the-game-early\">Plenty of NFL stars have left the game early<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most players leave the sport before they want to. But a select few reach the mountaintop and leave of their own accord.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most impactful examples of early retirement in recent memory was <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/andrew-luck\/\">Andrew Luck<\/a>. The former Colts QB played well enough to live up to the hype that came out of Stanford. It suggested he could be one of the faces of the league in the future. But the injuries he suffered took the enjoyment out of the game for him, so he left at 29. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tom-Brady-Andrew-Luck.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Andrew Luck shake hands after the AFC Divisional Playoff game in 2014\" class=\"wp-image-1537779\" width=\"1200\"\/><figcaption>Tom Brady and Andrew Luck after the AFC Divisional Playoff game in 2014 | Elsa\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Detroit Lions have the unwanted distinction of having two of the best players in their history, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/calvin-johnson-is-about-to-open-up-his-1st-business-since-retiring-from-the-nfl\/\">Calvin Johnson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/barry-sanders-isnt-the-only-legendary-nfl-running-back-to-retire-early\/\">Barry Sanders<\/a>, both retire early for similar reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other star players like Luke Kuechly have retired close to what should be their peak in the last few years. For all the glory football can provide, it also destroys your body. If you can get out with money in your pocket to set yourself up for the next stage, there's no shame in moving on.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a new phenomenon. The league and the NFL Players Association have negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement since then, so that number is surely higher now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most fans would love to make that money, but financial concerns remain a huge concern for most players. An injury that ends or seriously curtails your career could happen on every snap. The temptation to spend money recklessly can be too seductive to ignore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many of the players who come from low-income backgrounds, their bank accounts make them the meal ticket who can provide for family or friends who don't have the resources or fortune to make their way up the economic ladder on their own.\u00a0A study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/system\/files\/working_papers\/w21085\/w21085.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Bureau of Economic Research<\/a> found that about 16% of NFL retirees file for bankruptcy within 12 years of their final game.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For young NFL players, the football field is one big financial minefield: 78% of players go bankrupt or experience severe financial stress within two years of retiring <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LoOfp1Bx5p\">https:\/\/t.co\/LoOfp1Bx5p<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lT568GT8RJ\">pic.twitter.com\/lT568GT8RJ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Reuters Business (@ReutersBiz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReutersBiz\/status\/1043967403095461888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 23, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It's a lot for a twenty-something to contend with. But it's in everyone's best interest to become financially literate as soon as possible.\u00a0&#8220;Players should begin focusing on finances as soon as they're drafted and stick with it throughout their career. You don't have to be the highest-paid player to be successful, financially,&#8221; said Tom Sagissor, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcwealthmanagement.com\/en-us\/insights\/professional-athletes-need-a-retirement-game-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RBC Wealth Management<\/a> and former hockey player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things players can do to protect themselves: Consider getting term life insurance and permanent total disability insurance. Mixing business and interpersonal relationships is always awkward. But signing a prenuptial agreement with your partner is a firm way to safeguard your earnings in the long term.
