Charlie, who's only 13 years old, is still years away from being able to compete on the PGA Tour, but he's shown enough promise as a junior golfer to prove he can make it to the big leagues one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you're wondering where Charlie's name comes from, there's a touching story behind it. Tiger named his only son after the man who inspired him to first pick up a golf club: Charlie Sifford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tiger-woods-might-not-have-played-golf-if-it-wasn-t-for-charlie-sifford\">Tiger Woods might not have played golf if it wasn't for Charlie Sifford<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Charlie Sifford and Tiger Woods at the 1998 Nissan Open (AP). Sifford was the first African American to ever play in a PGA Tour event. He won only two PGA Tour events in his career, but he paved the way for black golfers to make a living in professional golf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those golfers turned out to be the greatest of all time, Tiger Woods. Tiger's father, Earl Woods, first picked up the sport because of Sifford, and he passed his love of the game down to his son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s not an exaggeration to say that without Charlie, and the other pioneers who fought to play, I may not be playing golf,&#8221; Tiger said in an email to The Associated Press after Sifford died in 2015, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/sports\/golf\/charlie-sifford-first-black-player-on-pga-tour-dies-at-92\/2216417\/#:~:text=Sifford%20and%20other%20black%20pioneers,wouldn't%20have%20either.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tampa Bay Times<\/a>. &#8220;My pop likely wouldn\u2019t have picked up the sport, and maybe I wouldn\u2019t have either.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tiger-woods-named-his-son-charlie-woods-after-charlie-sifford\">Tiger Woods named his son, Charlie Woods, after Charlie Sifford<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Charlie-Woods-Tiger-Woods.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods fist bump during the PNC Championship.\" class=\"wp-image-1542954\" \/><figcaption>Tiger Woods and son Charlie Woods celebrate on the seventh green during the first round of the PNC Championship at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club | Mike Ehrmann\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tiger became good friends with Sifford throughout his golf career.
