{"id":1547122,"date":"2023-01-21T19:49:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T00:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1547122"},"modified":"2023-01-21T19:49:39","modified_gmt":"2023-01-22T00:49:39","slug":"bill-belichick-needs-to-sacrifice-his-son-to-set-the-patriots-up-for-long-term-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/bill-belichick-needs-to-sacrifice-his-son-to-set-the-patriots-up-for-long-term-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Belichick Needs to Sacrifice His Son to Set the Patriots Up For Long-Term Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/bill-belichick\/\">Bill Belichick<\/a> still believes in doing what\u2019s best for his football team, he needs to cut ties with perhaps his closest colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And no, I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> referring to his confusing infatuation with oft-criticized and overmatched de-facto offensive coordinator Matt Patricia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, if Belichick intends to leave a lasting legacy with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/new-england-patriots\/\">New England Patriots<\/a>, he must set one of his sons free from the comfy confines of Foxborough before it\u2019s too late. Because as much as the second-winningest coach in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl\/\">NFL<\/a> history may enjoy having one of his offspring as his defensive play caller, the reality is that Steve Belichick is not the best option for the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if Robert Kraft plans to hand the reins over to his son with any semblance of confidence, the 81-year-old owner better hope his highest-paid employee has the future of the franchise at the forefront of his mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, if Bill Belichick lets personal relationships prevent the Patriots from keeping one of the league\u2019s most coveted assistants, it could be years before the Krafts celebrate a playoff victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steve-belichick-stands-in-the-way-of-jerod-mayo-moving-up-the-ladder-in-new-england\">Steve Belichick stands in the way of Jerod Mayo moving up the ladder in New England<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Close your eyes and listen. Of course, Bill Belichick took that to another level in 2022 by not naming an offensive coordinator, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while the no-OC experiment proved to be a colossal mistake, Belichick\u2019s decision to put the defense in the hands of a former lacrosse player and a retired Pro Bowl linebacker has mostly worked out for a Patriots team that finished second in points allowed in 2021 and 11th in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just because Steve Belichick and Mayo have managed to make the unconventional setup function well doesn\u2019t mean being on the same team is in either of their best interest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Mayo once again linked to head coaching and defensive coordinator vacancies, it\u2019s obvious he\u2019s widely respected around the league. Yet it\u2019s equally apparent that Belichick putting one of his sons in charge of play-calling duties and <em>not<\/em> one of the best defensive players in franchise history has raised warranted questions about what lies ahead for a team led by a soon-to-be 71-year-old head coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily for both Mayo and Patriots fans, it seems as though the Krafts have already taken measures to make sure the franchise doesn\u2019t lose another key coach. With the team surprisingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patriots.com\/news\/patriots-to-extend-jerod-mayo-will-begin-interviewing-for-an-offensive-coordinat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">releasing a statement<\/a> about working on a contract to keep Mayo around long-term, it certainly looks like the rising linebackers coach will remain in New England.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in what capacity? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s been plenty of speculation about whether Mayo will receive an official promotion, this shouldn\u2019t even be up for debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bill-belichick-must-sacrifice-his-son-for-the-greater-good\">Bill Belichick must sacrifice his son for the greater good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Bill-Belichick-Steve-Belichick-New-England-Patriots.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Steve Belichick and Bill Belichick ahead of a Patriots-Bengals matchup in December 2022\" class=\"wp-image-1547129\"\/><figcaption>Outside linebackers coach Steve Belichick of the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick talk during pregame against the Cincinnati Bengals at Gillette Stadium on December 24, 2022 | Winslow Townson\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For a coach who traded away stalwarts like Richard Seymour, Randy Moss, Logan Mankins, and Chandler Jones, Bill Belichick faces a tougher test of his business-oriented ways: figuring out a way to move on from Steve Belichick this offseason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has nothing to do with the younger Belichick\u2019s abilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, it has everything to do with rewarding Mayo <em>and<\/em> ensuring the Patriots have a qualified heir to a coach who could walk away at any time, given his age and resume.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s simple: As long as Steve Belichick is on his dad\u2019s coaching staff, Mayo won\u2019t have a chance to truly showcase his skills. And if other teams want to poach him from the Patriots, it makes zero sense for the Krafts to allow that to happen when they would be left with no viable replacement for the man who\u2019s been in charge since 2000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, Mayo deserves the opportunity to have full command of the defense and prove he can successfully run that side of the ball on his own. In order to do that, though, his boss would have to swallow his pride, call his son into his office, and have a tough conversation about needing to find a new job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, that route might be in the best interest of Mayo, the Patriots, <em>and <\/em>Steve Belichick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only would Mayo move into a more prominent role and further cement his case as a head coaching candidate, but his running mate would have a chance to make a name for himself elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-win-win-for-all-parties\">A win-win for all parties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Change is coming to the Patriots&#39; coaching staff.<br><br>Bill Belichick reportedly will make &quot;offensive coaching reassignments&quot; after his end-of-season meeting with Robert Kraft. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4XzXnbT6Tj\">https:\/\/t.co\/4XzXnbT6Tj<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oV5RZH481v\">pic.twitter.com\/oV5RZH481v<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Zack Cox (@zm_cox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zm_cox\/status\/1613265071081136150?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve Belichick should be open about taking his talents elsewhere, especially given the dynamics in play in Foxborough. Sure, it might be fun working for your father. And it certainly can\u2019t hurt to have talented players at your disposal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t change the fact that Steve Belichick will <em>never<\/em> be viewed as a viable head coaching candidate if he continues to call New England home. How can teams get a fair assessment of his abilities if he remains in his father\u2019s shadow? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some ways, Bill Belichick has done his son a disservice by not letting him spread his swings and leave the nest. But after two years of deploying this setup, things need to change for the sake of everyone involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerod Mayo must be shown the respect he\u2019s earned in the form of a raise, a title promotion, and perhaps something in writing that guarantees he\u2019ll at least be considered as Bill Belichick\u2019s successor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steve Belichick should look forward to a fresh start, perhaps as a defensive coordinator with a rebuilding franchise. Otherwise, he will stay stagnant in his own career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Bill Belichick should sacrifice his son for his own sake.
