For the third time in his career, whether via trade demand or not re-signing, Irving has turned his back on yet another NBA franchise. This time, it was demanding a trade away from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/brooklyn-nets\/\">Brooklyn Nets<\/a>\u00a0out of the blue, just six days before the 2023 NBA trade deadline. Less than 48 hours after the demand, the Nets made a Kyrie Irving trade with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/dallas-mavericks\/\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nets did about as well as they could in the deal, and the Mavericks are taking a major gamble with one of the most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/stephen-a-smith-nails-problem-with-kyrie-irving-behavior-during-twitter-exchange\/\">frustratingly polarizing players<\/a>\u00a0in the league. However, the one that got the most out of the deal was Irving. That\u2019s because not only did he get his way, but because of a Kyrie Irving contract, he also made $2 million in the deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-kyrie-irving-contract-made-the-pg-an-extra-2-million-in-the-trade\"><strong>The Kyrie Irving contract made the PG an extra $2 million in the trade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kyrie Irving \u27a1\ufe0f Dallas Mavericks. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2l1Vp1bTgW\">pic.twitter.com\/2l1Vp1bTgW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/1622330054280617989?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Kyrie Irving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-nets-should-take-a-page-out-of-the-boston-celtics-playbook-when-it-comes-to-kyrie-irving\/\">left the Boston Celtics<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 after telling the teams and its fans he would re-sign \u2014 he got a four-year, $136,490,600 contract from the Brooklyn Nets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was back in 2019, which means the 2022-23 season is the final year of Irving\u2019s deal. This season, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kyrie-irving-played-11-games-duke-former-college-teammate-seth-curry-says-monster-as-soon-as-got-to-campus\/\">former Duke Blue Devil<\/a>\u2019s base salary was $36,503,30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the stipulations of this Kyrie Irving contract is that there is a 15% trade kicker in the deal. That means if the team trades the guard, even if he\u2019s the one who requests it, extra money is added to the pact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what happened when the Mavericks sent Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick, and two second-round picks (2027, 2029) to the Nets in exchange for Irving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when the Kyrie Irving trade became official, he added a cool $1,982,507 to his 2022-23 earnings with the trade kicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s up to Mark Cuban and the Mavs as to whether they will give their new guard the Kyrie Irving contract extension he\u2019s looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A contract extension may have been the reason for the Kyrie Irving trade demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Kyrie-Irving-contract.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Kyrie Irving contract, Kyrie Irving trade, Kyrie Irving, Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks\" class=\"wp-image-1549114\" \/><figcaption>Kyrie Irving | Chris Coduto\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Irving shocked the NBA world by requesting a trade out of nowhere less than a week before the deadline, initial reports were that it was due to differences with the Nets about a Kyrie Irving contract extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nets and the player\u2019s agent, Shetellia Riley-Irving (also his stepmother), were discussing an extension when Irving\u2019s shock trade request came through. Multiple reports noted that the Nets were willing to give him a max extension of four years and around $210 million. However, they wanted to put some safeguards in it in case Irving became unreliable, which he has done multiple times in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That notion seemingly offended the guard, leading to the Kyrie Irving trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the Mavericks can give him a two-year, $78.6 million extension. However, if the parties wait until the Summer, which reports say they will, Irving could get that four-year extension or even a five-year, $272 million deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether Irving\u2019s new team will do that remains to be seen.
