With the officiating under fire,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl-referees-roger-goodell-defiant-answer-state-officiating\/\">Roger Goodell<\/a>\u00a0and the NFL decided to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl-referees-league-ruins-2023-super-bowl-choice-official\/\">assign the ref<\/a>\u00a0with the most penalty calls the last two seasons, Carl Cheffers, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/super-bowl\/\">Super Bowl<\/a>\u00a057. And after calling a relatively controversy-free contest, Cheffers and his team became the story of the game. A late, soft penalty call gifted the game to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/kansas-city-chiefs\/\">Kansas City Chiefs<\/a>\u00a0over the Philadelphia Eagles and sent &#8220;rigged&#8221; rocketing up the Twitter trending rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nfl-referee-carl-cheffers-and-his-crew-decided-the-super-bowl\"><strong>NFL referee Carl Cheffers and his crew decided the Super Bowl<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A hold was called here on a very uncatchable ball and almost no contact! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Rigged?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Rigged<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SuperBowlLVII?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SuperBowlLVII<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CPta77KBy2\">pic.twitter.com\/CPta77KBy2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rate the Refs App (@Rate_the_Refs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rate_the_Refs\/status\/1624969786894721025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl Cheffers and his crew threw 14.35 flags per game this season, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nflpenalties.com\/all-referees.php?view=total&amp;year=2022\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NFLpenalties.com<\/a>. In the Super Bowl, Cheffers worked with an &#8220;All-Star&#8221; crew and not his usual team. Still, the NFL referees' group called nine accepted penalties in the Big Game.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, the Chiefs had three penalties for 15 yards, while the Eagles were called for six with 33 yards in backward steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, none of those calls truly mattered like the last one. On 3rd-and-8 in a 35-35 game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes overthrew JuJu Smith-Schuster to (seemingly) stop the clock and force a field goal with 1:54 to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That's not how it worked out, though, as one of Cheffers' crew called holding on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CB did grab at Smith-Schuster's hips a bit, but it wasn't egregious. The soft call gave the Chiefs an automatic first down and allowed them to run the clock down to 0:11 and kick the game-winning field goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a horrible way to end a classic Super Bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why people think the NFL is &#8216;rigged' for the Chiefs <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Super-Bowl-referees-1.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"NFL referee, Super Bowl, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, NFL rigged\" class=\"wp-image-1549973\" \/><figcaption>NFL referee Carl Cheffers does the coin toss before Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles | Rob Carr\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While most fans don't truly think the NFL is rigged, it is getting easier and easier to see how some fans and fan bases so quickly make that leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season had questionable calls throughout, even some that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl-referee-carl-cheffers-explains-how-chris-jones-roughing-the-passer-while-holding-ball-after-terrible-chiefs-raiders-call\/\">went against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs<\/a>, but the last two games of the season got a little strange. Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league, so, of course, some will say he gets calls other QBs don't (and he probably does).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AFC Championship really sent the &#8220;NFL rigged&#8221; crowd into a frenzy, though, after some strange calls led to the Chiefs beating the Cincinnati Bengals.
