And while the money is nice, Carr also gets something he\u2019s never had before in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/derek-carr-tweet-qb-backtracks-promise-retire-instead-leaving-raiders\/\">his nine-year run<\/a>\u00a0as the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders starter, courtesy of the Saints defense. And this makes the Saints NFC South favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-saints-defense-is-the-best-derek-carr-has-ever-played-with\"><strong>The Saints defense is the best Derek Carr has ever played with<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Derek-Carr-Saints-1-1.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"New Orleans Saints, Derek Carr, Saints defense, NFC South favorites\" class=\"wp-image-1552832\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Derek Carr and the Saints defense | Jonathan Bachman\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>New Saints QB Derek Carr spent nine seasons with the Raiders and started 142 of the 146 games in that span. He missed one game in 2016 with a broken leg, one game in 2017 with a back injury, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/derek-carr-contract-why-raiders-must-cut-qb\/\">Josh McDaniels benched him<\/a>\u00a0for the final two games of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Tony Kornheiser likes to say, \u201cThat\u2019s it. That\u2019s the list.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In those seasons, here\u2019s how Carr ranked in scoring, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pro Football Reference<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>2014: 31st<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2015: 17th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2016: 7th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2017: 23rd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2018: 28th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019: 24th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2020: 10th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2021: 18th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022: 12th<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some obvious ups and downs there, but when Carr has solid weapons around him, he was able to lead a top-20 offensive unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing, even in the good Raiders offensive years, the defense was always atrocious. Here is how the defensive unit stacked up in the Derek Carr Era:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>2014: 32nd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2015: 22nd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2016: 20th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2017: 20th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2018: 32nd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019: 24th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2020: 30th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2021: 26th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022: 28th<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, among teams with 17 games, the Saints defense ranked seventh is scoring (345 points) and fifth in yards allowed (5,352 yards). The year before, the D was just as good, ranking fourth in points (335) and seventh in yards allowed (5,410).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that time, the Saints were 22nd (330) and 19th (364) in scoring offense for 2022 and 2021, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derek Carr joining a Saints team with a top-10 defense is an incredible thing for the QB, as he\u2019s never had that in his NFL career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is New Orleans the NFC South favorites?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Who dat \u269c\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DIY8gBGuGu\">pic.twitter.com\/DIY8gBGuGu<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Derek Carr (@derekcarrqb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/derekcarrqb\/status\/1632777656763842560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This one big move for Derek Carr makes the Saints NFC South favorites. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the offseason as division favorites, but with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/mike-francesa-tom-brady-isnt-goat-just-guy-who-played-longest\/\">Tom Brady\u2019s retirement<\/a>\u00a0and the Saints\u2019 Derek Carr acquisition, New Orleans now moves in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to FanDuel, the Saints\u2019 NFC South odds are now +120 to win the division over the Carolina Panthers (+260), Buccaneers, and Atlanta Falcons (+450).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just from starting QB perspective, the Saints are the best team by far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bucs, Panthers, and Falcons have little to no idea who their starting QB will be in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Falcons have the most stable situation, and that likely means starting second-year signal-caller Desmond Ridder, who has four starts and 708 career passing yards under his belt.
