Today\u2019s NBA stars don\u2019t understand that, which is why\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/draymond-green-is-no-michael-jordan-twitter-reacts-teammate-punching-comparison\/\">Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a throwback trash-talker in the modern NBA \u2014 was so surprised when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/gary-payton-legendary-competitive-edge-ultimately-came-back-to-bite-him\/\">Hall of Famer Gary Payton<\/a>\u00a0explained to him that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/larry-bird\/\">Larry Bird<\/a>\u00a0was \u201cthe coldest dude I ever seen\u201d when it came to trash talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gary-payton-surprised-draymond-green-with-his-larry-bird-stories\"><strong>Gary Payton surprised Draymond Green with his Larry Bird stories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Showing \ufeffUp and Throwing Down with Gary Payton, YG, and Chiney Ogwumike | THROWING BONES\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1DbvgsD5rsQ?start=1157&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>Uninterrupted: Thrown Bones<\/em>, a show where basketball luminaries and celebrities play dominoes worth Draymond Green, Gary Payton regaled Green, WNBA star and ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike, and hip hop star YG with stories of the NBA good ol\u2019 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Green, a noted trash-talker himself, asked legendary yapper Payton who the biggest trash-talkers he had ever played against. Among the usual suspects and some surprising additions, Payton mentioned Larry Bird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Payton singled out the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/calling-larry-bird-the-hick-from-french-lick-wasnt-accurate-according-to-former-celtic\/\">Hick From French Lick<\/a>\u201d for this trash talk Green incredulously asked, \u201cBird talked s*** s***, like we talk?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when Payton schooled the youngster on the on-court ways of Larry Legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet me tell you all something. Bird used to tell me, \u2018I\u2019m going to shoot this mother***ing jumper in your face right there in that corna\u2019. And it\u2019s going to be your Christmas present. I\u2019m gonna wrap it up and bust yo\u2019 head open.\u2019 All that s***,\u201d Payton told Green. \u201cHe\u2019s the coldest dude I ever seen with that s***, man. Everyone talking about these great greats and always mentioning him. He was the s***. The s***. He\u2019ll give it to you any way he wanted to. Any way he wanted to. Larry Bird was cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that, Draymond Green learned a lesson about Larry Bird. Just like so many basketball players through the years, Green saw a skinny, quiet, blonde,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-once-told-charles-barkley-during-game-theres-not-a-white-guy-on-the-planet-that-can-guard-me\/\">white guy from Indiana<\/a>\u00a0and assumed certain things about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as usual, Bird (or a legendary story about Bird) confounded those expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the most interesting thing about Gary Payton saying that Bird is the \u201ccoldest\u201d trash-talker he ever played against is that the two only faced-off four times in their NBA careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gary Payton vs. Larry Bird only happened four times<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Gary-Payton-Larry-Bird-1.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Larry Bird, Gary Payton, Draymond Green\" class=\"wp-image-1554304\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(L-R) Gary Payton, Larry Bird | Focus on Sport\/Getty Image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that Gary Payton says Larry Bird is \u201cthe coldest dude I ever seen\u201d when it comes to trash-talking is pretty amazing when you consider how little the two overlapped in the NBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Payton was the No. 2 overall pick of the 1990 NBA Draft by the Seattle Supersonics out of Oregon State. By that point, Bird\u2019s back was a mess, and he was in the twilight of his career with the Boston Celtics. In fact, Bird would only play two seasons with Payton in the league, 1990-91 and 1991-92.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with the Sonics in the Western Conference and the Celtics in the East, the two future Hall of Famer\u2019s teams only played twice a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In those games, Bird\u2019s Celtics were 4-0 vs. Payton\u2019s Sonics. And even with an aching back, Bird outplayed the rookie and second-year player by a solid margin. Bird still dominated Payton and the Sonics when they played in the early 90s.
