The player who infamously didn\u2019t make the trip to Barcelona was Detroit Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas, and most believe that Chicago Bulls superstar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/michael-jordan\/\">Michael Jordan<\/a>\u00a0is the reason why. That includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/charles-barkley\/\">Charles Barkley<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan and Thomas\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-once-showed-up-at-schlitz-malt-liquor-summer-league-summoned-isiah-thomas-pistons-great-stole-show\/\">were once friends<\/a>, but the years of rivalry in the Eastern Conference of the NBA soured that. And while there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/it-wasnt-michael-jordan-who-kept-isiah-thomas-off-the-dream-team\/\">various stories and opinions<\/a>\u00a0as to who was most responsible for leaving Thomas off the Dream Team, Barkley made it clear that it was Jordan\u2019s call. And the \u201cRound Mound of Rebound\u201d wants everyone to know that he had nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-isiah-thomas-was-the-most-notable-dream-team-omission\"><strong>Isiah Thomas was the most notable Dream Team omission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MJ denied keeping Isiah Thomas off the Dream Team. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7OW87kZwAZ\">pic.twitter.com\/7OW87kZwAZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BleacherReport\/status\/1257124663966101504?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To make a long story short,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-joined-dream-team-1-reason-wasnt-win-gold\/\">the 1992 Dream Team<\/a>\u00a0was the greatest collection of basketball talent ever assembled on one squad. And while it mostly featured the best NBA players in the world at the time, there was one notable exception in Isiah Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Piston point guard had led his team to back-to-back NBA championships in 1989 and 1990, and, even at 31 in the summer of \u201992, he was still a perennial All-Star. However, Thomas didn\u2019t make the Dream Team, even though his Pistons coach Chuck Daly was the head coach of the Olympic squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Jordan and Thomas famously didn\u2019t get along at that point after hard-fought series between the Pistons and Bulls. And when Chicago finally dethroned Detroit, Thomas didn\u2019t stick around to shake hands at the end of the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all that at play, the common narrative is that Jordan put his foot down and wouldn\u2019t allow Thomas on the team, despite the GOAT\u2019s tepid denials over the years. In recent years, Jordan has taken a little more responsibility for the decision but still refuses to take all the blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Charles Barkley says it was Michael Jordan who kept Thomas off the Dream Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In Episode 5 of \u2018Icons Club,\u2019 Jackie MacMullan details how the Dream Team experienced helped some of the NBA\u2019s biggest rivals form friendships\u2014even Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cVof6la7of\">https:\/\/t.co\/cVof6la7of<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Ringer (@ringer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ringer\/status\/1509864699411812368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, Michael Jordan seems to admit that he did play a role in the Isiah Thomas Dream Team snub.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/isiah-thomas-couldnt-care-less-if-scottie-pippen-wanted-him-1992-dream-team-man-come-on-you-cant-say-nothing\/\">Audio of Jordan on tape<\/a>\u00a0with legendary sports writer Jack McCallum captures him saying as much, and \u201cHis Airness\u201d admitted he played a role in the most recent Dream Team documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he also suggests other members of the team didn\u2019t want the polarizing point guard there either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, rumors of Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson, and even Chuck Daly not wanting Thomas around have bubbled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Dream Team member wants to make it clear that he had nothing to do with it, though, and Charles Barkley is happy to throw MJ under the bus to make his point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to go on the record saying this \u2014 and I\u2019ve said it a hundred times \u2014 and it clearly finally came out that Michael did say he didn\u2019t want [Thomas] on the team,\u201d Barkley told Jackie MacMullan on her <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/5-the-dream-team-icons-club\/id1483525141?i=1000555932765\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Icons Club podcast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was never asked that question. Isiah probably should have been on that team,\u201d Barkley admitted. \u201cBut that always drove me crazy because I\u2019ve said it 1,975 times. They never mentioned Isiah Thomas to me. It was never like, \u2018Will you play if Isiah\u2019s on the team?\u2019 That never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not shocking that Barkley would throw Jordan under the bus like that these days, as the two no longer speak after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-charles-barkley-falling-out-started-over-nba-draft-bust-adam-morrison\/\">a public falling out<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where does Thomas rank on the list of best NBA PGs of all time? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"703\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Michael-Jordan-Charles-Barkley-Isiah-Thomas-1.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas, Dream Team\" class=\"wp-image-1554644\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(L-R) Michael Jordan; Charles Barkley and Isiah Thomas |  Jacob Kupferman\/Getty Images; Maddie Meyer\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Isiah Thomas was a 12-time All-Star, six-time first-team All-NBA team member, and two-time NBA champion. He won the 1984-85 assists title and the 1988-89 NBA Finals MVP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where does he rank among the best point guards of all time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas is now 10th on the all-time NBA assists list (9,061) and 68th in points (18,822). But that doesn\u2019t tell the whole story, as his toughness, leadership, and relentless defense also made him the player he was in the 1980s and \u201890s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas is on the NBA\u2019s 75th Anniversary Team as one of the 75 (or,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/everyone-going-hate-nba-75-team-76-team-but-thats-point\/\">really 76<\/a>) best players of all time. When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/33297498\/the-nba-75th-anniversary-team-ranked-where-76-basketball-legends-check-our-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a>\u00a0ranked the list, Thomas ended up at No. 27 overall and as the No. 6 PG behind John Stockton (No. 24), Jerry West (No. 19), Stephen Curry (No. 16), Oscar Robertson (No. 9), and Magic Johnson (No. 4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right behind him on that list are Chris Paul (No. 29), Allen Iverson (No. 31), Bob Cousy (No. 35), and Steve Nash (No. 37).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That ranking seems about right. From a talent perspective, Paul, Iverson, Nash, and even Jason Kidd and Gary Payton were better.
