{"id":1556939,"date":"2023-04-08T11:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-08T15:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1556939"},"modified":"2023-04-08T11:39:06","modified_gmt":"2023-04-08T15:39:06","slug":"just-like-final-xfinity-race-of-2022-ty-gibbs-has-upper-hand-on-rival-noah-gragson-has-to-sting-really-bad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/just-like-final-xfinity-race-of-2022-ty-gibbs-has-upper-hand-on-rival-noah-gragson-has-to-sting-really-bad\/","title":{"rendered":"Just Like in the Final Xfinity Race of 2022, Ty Gibbs Has the Upper Hand on Rival Noah Gragson \u2014 And It Has to Sting Really Bad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A season after their epic battle for the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, bitter rivals Ty Gibbs and Noah Gragson are now rookies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/motorsports\/\">NASCAR Cup Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unlike last year \u2014 when the two seemed virtually glued together on the race track and traded paint and barbs on multiple occasions \u2014 Gibbs has put some significant distance between himself and the driver he beat for the Xfinity title by finishing one spot ahead in the final race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why are the two young drivers who went down to the wire for Xfinity Series glory just five months ago enjoying <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/noah-gragson-ty-gibbs-nascar-rookie-of-the-year-award\/\">such different levels of success<\/a> as full-timers at the Cup Series level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ty-gibbs-is-finding-his-way-in-the-nascar-cup-series\">Ty Gibbs is finding his way in the NASCAR Cup Series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ty Gibbs holds off Noah Gragson to win the 2022 Xfinity Championship | NASCAR ON FOX HIGHLIGHTS\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lKyGkWtdZK4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If ever there was a driver set up to make a smooth transition to the NASCAR Cup Series, it was Ty Gibbs. The 20-year-old grandson of NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs, Ty made 51 Xfinity Series starts for Joe Gibbs Racing over the past two years \u2014 winning 11 races and the 2022 championship in the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ty-gibbs-proved-beyond-a-shadow-of-any-doubt-that-he-was-ready-for-move-to-the-nascar-cup-series\/\">moving to NASCAR\u2019s premier division<\/a> with a new organization as many drivers do, Gibbs had the advantage of not only staying with JGR \u2014 one of the Cup Series\u2019 elite organizations \u2014 but keeping his Xfinity Series crew chief (Chris Gayle) and primary sponsor (Monster Energy). Heck, Gibbs even has the same car number \u2014 54 \u2014 and paint scheme that he carried to the Xfinity Series championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s not the least bit surprising that after a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/archrivals-ty-gibbs-noah-gragson-dont-have-much-to-brag-about-2-races-into-rookie-cup-season\/\">somewhat slow start this year<\/a>, Gibbs has <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ty-gibbs-taking-different-approach-starts-become-true-contender-nascar-cup-series\/\">reeled off three consecutive ninth-place finishes<\/a> and is nine spots ahead of fellow rookie Noah Gragson in the overall standings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/TyGibbs\/status\/1637879876542767104\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really learning so much each and every time I get behind the wheel,\u201d Gibbs said in his team\u2019s prerace news release ahead of Sunday night\u2019s race at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-bristol-dirt-race-week-edition\/\">Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt track<\/a>. \u201cI get to race against the best stock-car racers in the world every week. Hopefully, all my hard work will pay off. I worked really hard in the offseason and have continued to during the start of the season, and my team has been working really hard as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a long year, and we\u2019ll keep working each week and try to get better and better as the season goes along. We have three top-10 finishes in a row, we are just working on minimizing our mistakes, and the last three weeks it\u2019s paid off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unlike Ty Gibbs, Noah Gragson has struggled big time out of the gate in Cup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Noah Gragson couldn\u2019t be in a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/legacy-motor-club-failed-miserably-follow-momentum-2022\/\">much more different situation<\/a> than Ty Gibbs \u2014 both in terms of the team he\u2019s with and the trajectory of his rookie season. Unlike Gibbs, whose jump to full-time Cup Series status was virtually seamless for obvious reasons, Gragson is driving for an organization in Legacy Motor Club that\u2019s competing under its third name and ownership structure in as many seasons. Not only that, but Legacy Motor Club \u2014 formerly known as Petty GMS and Richard Petty Motorsports \u2014 has a stable consisting of just two full-time Cup teams, as opposed to JGR\u2019s four full-time entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congrats from The King \ud83e\udd1d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QpNPK1nVIB\">pic.twitter.com\/QpNPK1nVIB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; LEGACY MOTOR CLUB (@LEGACYMotorClub) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LEGACYMotorClub\/status\/1557453287925993472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>There\u2019s also been some internal strife at Legacy Motor Club this year, with the team\u2019s \u201cchief ambassador,\u201d Richard Petty, complaining to reporters at Daytona in February that he feels like fellow seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson \u2014 the organization\u2019s first-year co-owner \u2014 has effectively pushed him to the curb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these factors, in combination with Gragson \u2014 who spent the last four seasons as a full-time Xfinity Series driver with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/without-superstar-noah-gragson-jr-motorsports-unlikely-miss-beat-2023\/\">JR Motorsports<\/a> \u2014 being a total newcomer to Legacy Motor Club, puts the driver in an extremely different predicament than Gibbs. And it\u2019s proving to be a difference maker on the race track, where Gragson has yet to crack the top 10 and has just two top-20 finishes in seven starts behind the wheel of his No. 42 Chevrolet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Well threw that one away before it even started. Sped twice during the first green flag stops in stage 1 and put our team 2 laps down. Chased the wave around all day. Felt like we had good speed. Thanks all of you for the support. Live and learn and be better in the future.<\/p>&mdash; Noah Gragson (@NoahGragson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NoahGragson\/status\/1632545107759988736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly for Gragson, he doesn\u2019t sound overly optimistic about a turnaround this weekend on the Bristol dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not much of a \u2018dirt\u2019 guy, so it\u2019s challenging for me to know where on the track I need to run and how sideways I can get my car,\u201d he said in his team\u2019s prerace news release. \u201cWe\u2019re up for a new opportunity and new challenge this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Sunday\u2019s race is anywhere close to as challenging as <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ty-gibbs-vs-noah-gragson-isnt-only-nascar-rookie-of-the-year-miscalculation\/\">Gragson\u2019s rookie season<\/a> has been, he\u2019s in for a rough ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Given their checkered past, Noah Gragson can\u2019t be happy about Ty Gibbs\u2019 Cup success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Being outpaced by Ty Gibbs at virtually every stop on the Cup Series schedule this season has to feel like salt in the wound for Noah Gragson \u2014 especially after Gragson fell just short of beating Gibbs for the Xfinity Series championship in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, there\u2019s no love lost between the two youngsters after tangling multiple times and combining for a total of 15 wins last year as they waged quite the showdown for the Xfinity crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How bad was the blood between Gragson and Gibbs? Well, at Championship 4 Media Day, which rolled around just ahead of the season finale at Phoenix Raceway, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/noah-gragson-fires-multiple-shots-ty-gibbs-championship-4%EF%BF%BC\/\">Gragson fired a rather harsh jab<\/a> at his title nemesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCAR?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCAR<\/a> \u2026 Noah Gragson, asked if Ty Gibbs might be less aggressive after last week, said: \u201cHe doesn\u2019t care. \u2026 He lives in Fantasyland.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GrPO2ebz7J\">pic.twitter.com\/GrPO2ebz7J<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Dustin Long (@dustinlong) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dustinlong\/status\/1588226679054295040?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just voicing my opinion: I don\u2019t like him,\u201d Gragson told reporters in a recorded interview that you can watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/r9mSPlwxyWg\">here<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s just speaking what everybody doesn\u2019t want to say, but they feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, while standing on pit road just moments after finishing second to Gibbs in the season finale, Gragson was equally blunt about his distaste for the driver who\u2019d just edged for him the championship by a single position on the race track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt definitely sucks to lose to someone like that,\u201d Gragson said in a live TV interview with NBC Sports that you can watch below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gragson on Gibbs: &#039;It definitely sucks to lose to someone like that&#039;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NdRSPwpLbkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gragson, 24, then took one last verbal shot at 20-year-old Gibbs during his post-race press conference, a portion of which you can watch below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to be buddies with him when he was younger,\u201d the championship runner-up said. \u201cI\u2019ve told him, \u2018Hey, you used to be a super-cool kid, and you\u2019ve kind of turned into a little bit of a douchebag.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Noah Gragson to Ty Gibbs: &quot;You Kinda Turned Into a Little Bit of a D-Bag.&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nzq22KEyr24?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, Gragson can\u2019t be happy that Gibbs has the upper hand on him so far in their <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/outspoken-noah-gragson-will-be-breath-of-fresh-air-to-cup-series\/\">first year as full-time Cup Series competitors<\/a>.
