They\u2019re just part of living. But two <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/hendrick-motorsports-set-take-domination-2023-nascar-season-another-level\/\">Hendrick Motorsports<\/a> drivers getting injured in non-<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/motorsports\/\">NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series-related accidents less than two months apart?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, that\u2019s a bit much. Actually, way too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for this reason, it\u2019s time for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/rick-hendrick-3-6-million-acquisition-300-wins-sure-is-sweet\/\">team owner Rick Hendrick<\/a> to start having a say in the kinds of extracurricular activities his drivers engage in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chase Elliott has no regrets about his snowboarding adventures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Chase Elliott says he will continue to use snowboarding as a training tool, that it was just an unfortunate accident on landing. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/30R5gfNi0K\">pic.twitter.com\/30R5gfNi0K<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1646571841908080642?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By all accounts, NASCAR Cup Series drivers live very busy lives. On top of competing 38 weekends out of the year, if you include the two non-points races on the Cup schedule, drivers have various obligations throughout the week that occupy a lot of their time. These commitments typically include attending a team meeting, participating in daily workouts, jumping in a race simulator for several hours to prepare for the next race, making one or multiple sponsor-related appearances, and fulfilling various media duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s no wonder that when drivers finally get a minute to do as they please, they like to take advantage of the time by participating in what they consider fun activities. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/Chase-Elliott\/\">Chase Elliott<\/a>, for example. One activity he\u2019s long enjoyed is snowboarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s just one problem, though. It was on a snowboarding trip in Colorado on March 3 that Elliott broke his leg \u2014 resulting in three hours of surgery and the need to sit out the next six races while his fractured tibia healed and he underwent extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott returned to the seat of his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet two weekends ago, but he missed valuable time that included multiple opportunities to potentially snare a victory and punch a ticket into the playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">See y\u2019all at Martinsville <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/di9?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#di9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gm18ZxINCs\">pic.twitter.com\/gm18ZxINCs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Chase Elliott (@chaseelliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chaseelliott\/status\/1646241387145461772?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Elliott absolutely <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-will-chase-elliott-need-to-do-to-make-nascar-playoffs\/\"><em>has<\/em> to win one of the final 16 races<\/a> in the regular season to become playoff-eligible. Failure to win would result in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/chase-elliott-is-proof-that-you-can-win-nascar-most-popular-driver-award-without-winning-personality\/\">NASCAR\u2019s perennial most popular driver<\/a> missing the playoffs for the first time because the four races he missed dropped him so far down in the standings that he can\u2019t make the postseason on the basis of points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite all of this, Elliott has no regrets about engaging in the extracurricular activity that led to his injury and might cost him an opportunity to compete for a championship later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSnowboarding is something that I\u2019ve been doing for a long time,\u201d Elliott told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/nascar\/chase-elliott-details-leg-injury-martinsville-return-its-going-to-be-tough\">FOX Sports\u2019 Bob Pockrass<\/a> in an article published on April 13. \u201cI\u2019m comfortable doing it, and I wasn\u2019t out doing anything that was wild or crazy. I don\u2019t have a cool story to tell. It was just that perfect storm that could happen at any point in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of those things that I\u2019ve used as a training tool over the years, no different than riding bikes. I just don\u2019t agree with that viewpoint of, \u2018Well you shouldn't have been doing this or you shouldn't have been doing that.\u2019 I feel like I make decisions with my career in mind first. I always have, and this was no different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll take Elliott at his word. But does that mean going snowboarding is really the best idea for a professional \u2014 and highly compensated \u2014 race car driver who should take every necessary precaution to ensure he\u2019s actually showing up for work on Sundays?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alex-bowman-faces-an-uphill-climb-thanks-to-an-unnecessary-injury\">Alex Bowman faces an uphill climb thanks to an unnecessary injury<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As misfortune would have it, Alex Bowman now finds himself in a situation remarkably similar to the one Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott has been in for most of the 2023 season. He\u2019s expected to miss the next 3-4 races while recovering from a fractured vertebra he <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alex-bowman-took-hit-more-nascar-drivers-may-feel\/\">suffered in a crash while participating in a sprint car event<\/a> on Tuesday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EuWUyoWQEz\">https:\/\/t.co\/EuWUyoWQEz<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Np3zmmdDbD\">pic.twitter.com\/Np3zmmdDbD<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Alex Bowman (@Alex_Bowman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Alex_Bowman\/status\/1651279996181266433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bowman is currently ninth in the standings and on solid footing to make the playoffs despite being winless in 10 races this season. But his position in the standings will have undoubtedly plummeted by the time he\u2019s sidelined for three or four weeks, so, like Elliott, his only way into the playoffs will likely be through a win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a terribly sad and unfortunate predicament for Bowman to be in when you consider that he\u2019s been one of the sport\u2019s most consistent drivers this season, earning six top-10 finishes in 10 starts. In fact, had it not been for a 60-point penalty that he and his team received after flunking an inspection following the race at Richmond on April 2, he\u2019d be second in the standings \u2014 just one point behind championship leader Christopher Bell.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Bowman, who signed a multi-year <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alex-bowman-ross-chastain-deserved-their-contract-extensions-but-daniel-suarez-its-debatable\/\">contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports<\/a> before the season began, is going to have to run like his pants are on fire to make the playoffs \u2014 something that still seemed like a foregone conclusion prior to the news of his impending absence. And to think this scenario could\u2019ve been avoided if he\u2019d simply stayed home and played video games on Tuesday night instead of participating in a sprint car race several states away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like Elliott, Bowman didn\u2019t do anything inherently wrong. But did the reward truly outweigh the risk of suffering an injury that could jeopardize his ability to successfully perform his day job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cup Series drivers, especially Hendrick drivers, must start prioritizing personal safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Hendrick-Drivers.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=683&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Hendrick Motorsport drives Chase Elliott (R) and Alex Bowman (L) talk at Martinsville.\" class=\"wp-image-1559797\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Both Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman have suffered unnecessary injuries this year. | Sean Gardner\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman have learned their lessons and will think twice before pursuing another activity that could put their health at risk and force them to miss time at the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t count on it, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Elliott\u2019s comments just a couple of weeks ago, it sounds like he has no regrets about going snowboarding and plans to pick up his cherished hobby again as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Bowman, one can only speculate about his future plans, but I won\u2019t hold my breath there, either. If I had to guess, he\u2019ll be back in a sprint car before you know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some might argue that it makes no sense for people who drive NASCAR stock cars for a living to go overboard in the area of personal safety, I passionately disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, driving a Cup Series car carries certain risks, but NASCAR has spent the better part of the last two-and-a-half decades rolling out safety enhancements that make these cars virtually bulletproof. Can a driver still get hurt? Well, of course. Just last season, Bowman and Kurt Busch both missed extended time dealing with concussions they suffered in a Next Generation Cup Series vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar-confesses-how-badly-it-screwed-up-next-gen-car\/\">NASCAR reacted accordingly during the offseason<\/a> and went to great lengths to make the Next Generation car significantly safer. Is it perfect? Certainly not, but the fact that Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece both <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kevin-harvick-details-violence-next-gen-car-crash-revealing-drivers-heads-impact\/\">walked away from a horrific collision<\/a> last weekend at Talladega speaks to just how protected these drivers are inside their cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In-car: Ryan Preece makes hard contact with Kyle Larson | NASCAR | Talladega\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o3dMIrPQtCk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The bottom line? NASCAR has done its job to keep drivers out of harm\u2019s way when they\u2019re strapped into their machines. Now, it\u2019s time for the drivers \u2014 and especially the drivers at Hendrick Motorsports \u2014 to leave no stone unturned in staying safe when they\u2019re on their own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I\u2019m Rick Hendrick and I\u2019ve had two of my drivers sidelined with non-Cup Series-related injuries in less than two months, I\u2019m saying enough is enough and making them sign an agreement today saying they won\u2019t participate in non-essential extracurricular activities that pose an increased risk of injury or death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, this doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not allowed to get in their personal vehicle and drive to the grocery store or post office, or race shop. Such an activity would fall under the category of \u201cessential.\u201d Ditto for exercising or taking a vacation, which don\u2019t pose an increased risk of injury or death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the days of drivers snowboarding or skydiving or bungee jumping or competing in non-NASCAR sanctioned races should be over.
