Not only did the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/philadelphia-76ers\/\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> have a championship-winning head coach in Billy Cunningham running the show, but they were also led by veterans Julius Erving and Moses Malone at the time. The two Hall of Famers recognized Barkley's immense potential right away, so they took him under their collective wing during his rookie year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of their first orders of business was taking Barkley on a $25,000 shopping spree to upgrade his wardrobe, and they taught him a valuable lesson he still remembers nearly four decades later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-julius-erving-and-moses-malone-took-charles-barkley-on-a-25-000-shopping-spree\">Julius Erving and Moses Malone took Charles Barkley on a $25,000 shopping spree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"870\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Charles-Barkley-Julius-Erving.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=713&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Charles Barkley and Julius Erving speak at the 2016 ESPYs.\" class=\"wp-image-1560623\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Former NBA players Charles Barkley and Julius Erving attend the 2016 ESPYS at Microsoft Theater | Kevin Winter\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the moment Charles Barkley stepped inside the Sixers' practice facility, he was prepared to contribute to a championship-caliber team. Although he could play like an NBA player from a young age, he didn't know how to act like an NBA player when he joined the 76ers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a rookie, Barkley wore sweatpants almost everywhere he went. Julius Erving and Moses Malone, who were seasoned veterans by 1984, took it upon themselves to help the rookie upgrade his fashion sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barkley told the story to NBA reporter Jackie MacMullan on her podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/2-dr-j-and-the-aba-icons-club\/id1483525141?i=1000554837211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Icons Club<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They say, \u2018We\u2019re taking you shopping,'&#8221; Barkley said. &#8220;They took me to Boards store, and I spent like $25,000. I was like, \u2018Are y\u2019all crazy?\u2019 Because I ain\u2019t never made any money in my life. They buy me about 10 to 15 suits, and the bill was like $25,000. When I got the bill, I was like, \u2018Man, y\u2019all are crazy.\u2019 And I remember calling my agent and my mom and grandma. \u2018I spent $25,000 today, y\u2019all.\u2019 And my grandmother says, \u2018I never made that much money in my life.\u2019 And it was so funny, but they were right. You\u2019re a superstar. Make sure these other guys feel important,'&#8221; Barkley said about Erving. &#8220;&#8216;Number one, you\u2019re going to get all the blame,\u2019 which is 100 percent correct. And he says, \u2018You\u2019re going to get really almost all the credit. You\u2019re kind of an amateur psychologist.\u2019 He says, \u2018You\u2019ve got to make those guys feel special cause number one you\u2019re getting all the credit. Hey, when you all go to dinner, you grab the check.
