{"id":1564746,"date":"2023-05-13T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-13T19:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1564746"},"modified":"2023-05-13T15:39:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-13T19:39:02","slug":"5-drivers-who-can-actually-tame-track-too-tough-to-tame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/5-drivers-who-can-actually-tame-track-too-tough-to-tame\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Drivers Who Can Actually Tame the Track \u2018Too Tough to Tame\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If there\u2019s one track in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/motorsports\/\">NASCAR<\/a> that almost every driver will tell you is not easily tamed, it\u2019s Darlington Raceway \u2014 otherwise known as the track \u201cToo Tough to Tame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to its preferred racing groove that runs right up against the outside wall and places drivers in constant danger of hitting it, Darlington carries a nickname that\u2019s more than just a moniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, someone will inevitably come out on top in Sunday\u2019s Goodyear 400 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-darlington-edition\/\">notoriously difficult 1.33-mile oval<\/a>, so we might as well consider a handful of drivers who have the potential to do just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-erik-jones\">5. Two of his three NASCAR Cup Series wins have come at Darlington \u2014 and they\u2019ve come with two different teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/erik-jones-surprise-win-darlington-wasnt-underdog-story-you-think-it-was\/\">Jones claimed his most recent triumph<\/a> at the track \u201cToo Tough to Tame\u201d last Labor Day weekend when he played the role of playoff spoiler in his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet. Three years earlier, while part of Joe Gibbs Racing, Jones enjoyed the same result in the Southern 500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Jones could pull off the Darlington hattrick this weekend, it would be quite a feat, though, considering that he\u2019s recorded only two top-10s \u2014 and has no top-fives \u2014 in a dozen starts this season for the organization that was <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/jimmie-johnson-first-month-rookie-team-owner-has-been-disaster-dont-expect-quick-fix\/\">rebranded in the offseason as Legacy Motor Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again, Jones\u2019 record when he showed up at Darlington last summer was likewise underwhelming, and he still went to Victory Lane. So the bottom line is this: He can\u2019t ever be counted out at the track sometimes known as the \u201cLady in Black.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Martin Truex Jr.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"art\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udfc1 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ze7lXb50BY\">https:\/\/t.co\/ze7lXb50BY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Martin Truex Jr. (@MartinTruex_Jr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MartinTruex_Jr\/status\/1653183759015985158?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 1, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A two-time winner at Darlington, Martin Truex Jr. had last year\u2019s Southern 500 seemingly in hand before a late-race water pump failure sent his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to the garage and out of the race. As it was, Truex still led 48 laps \u2014 but it was all for naught when it counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Truex went on to be shut out of Victory Lane for the entirety of the season, failing to win a race for the first time since 2014. But this season has been a different story for the veteran driver and 2017 Cup Series champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He not only <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/martin-truex-jr-suddenly-seems-more-likely-to-renew-contract\/\">ended a 54-race skid<\/a> a couple of weeks ago at Dover, but he\u2019s been overall head and shoulders better than he was in 2022 \u2014 and that bodes well for his chances of earning his second win of 2023 and third career triumph at the track \u201cToo Tough to Tame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Joey Logano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Joey-Logano-1.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=683&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Joey Logano in his car at Kansas.\" class=\"wp-image-1564760\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joey Logano has a good chance to make noise at Darlington. | Jonathan Bachman\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most controversial finishes of 2022 took place in the Darlington spring race when Joey Logano knocked William Byron out of the way with under two laps go before sailing to his first victory of what would be a championship season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Logano hasn\u2019t won at Darlington before or since that day, but the simple fact that he\u2019s the defending race winner warrants him being a part of the discussion about who has a great opportunity to finish P1 this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/joey-logano-is-fired-up-to-repeat-as-champ-after-daytona-500-miss-offseason-insult\/\">From a motivational standpoint<\/a>, it also probably doesn\u2019t hurt Logano that he\u2019s gone seven races without a trip to the Winner\u2019s Circle \u2014 because, for him, that\u2019s quite a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Also missing is that prior to last season, Larson had ripped off three consecutive runner-up finishes and four consecutive top-three finishes at the rural South Carolina race track.<br><br>So, Larson certainly knows how to find his way to the front at Darlington. The problem has just been staying there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After getting the short end of a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/denny-hamlin-kyle-larson-put-on-show-kansas-nascar-surprisingly-let-happen\/\">last-lap battle with Denny Hamlin<\/a> last Sunday at Kansas, Larson should have even more incentive to finally break through at Darlington, where he\u2019s been close but no cigar on numerous occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. And not just because he has momentum on his side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also because he boasts a downright stellar Darlington resume highlighted by four wins in the last 13 years at the egg-shaped oval. The most recent of those wins came just two years ago on Labor Day weekend when Hamlin led 146 of 367 laps en route to a commanding victory in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019d be the favorite this weekend even if he weren\u2019t fresh off a victory at Kansas, but last weekend\u2019s success makes him an overwhelming favorite to go to Victory Lane.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Darlington can provide a challenge for even the best NASCAR drivers.
