Win one of the next 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, NASCAR\u2019s five-time most popular driver will miss the playoffs for the first time in eight tries due mainly to his absence from seven of the season\u2019s first 15 events when he, of course, collected no points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">See y\u2019all at Martinsville <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/di9?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#di9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gm18ZxINCs\">pic.twitter.com\/gm18ZxINCs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Chase Elliott (@chaseelliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chaseelliott\/status\/1646241387145461772?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar-chase-elliott-playoff-waivers-deserved-deeper-thought\/\">NASCAR granting Elliott not one but two waivers<\/a>, the Hendrick Motorsports driver remains playoff-eligible. To make it into the 16-driver field of championship contenders, though, he\u2019ll need to find his way to Victory Lane before the regular season concludes \u2014 a fairly tall order if you look at the list of upcoming tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, there\u2019s one track still left on the regular season schedule where Elliott has a golden opportunity to score a playoff-clinching win. That track is <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/who-has-most-nascar-cup-series-wins-watkins-glen-international\/\">Watkins Glen International<\/a>, the fast 2.45-mile road course in Upstate New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in just a moment, we\u2019ll explore why WGI is far and away Elliott\u2019s best chance to get it done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-last-10-regular-season-races-taken-in-totality-don-t-bode-well-for-chase-elliott\">The last 10 regular-season races, taken in totality, don\u2019t bode well for Chase Elliott<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Track going up!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCARChicago?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCARChicago<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vem4GKz72N\">pic.twitter.com\/vem4GKz72N<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend (@NASCARChicago) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCARChicago\/status\/1665515241705295875?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 5, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead to the final 10 tracks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-things-nascar-nailed-3-things-nascar-botched-badly-2023-cup-schedule\/\">NASCAR Cup Series\u2019 regular season<\/a>, Chase Elliott is going to have his work cut out for him. At least if history \u2014 or lack thereof \u2014 means anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the remaining pre-playoff venues, Elliott has competed at but never won at five of them. Then there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar-smart-call-chicago-street-race-to-maintain-competitive-balance\/\">inaugural race on the Chicago street course<\/a>, which will be new not only to Elliott but the entire field of drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given everyone\u2019s lack of experience on the Chicago circuit, it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess who might emerge victorious. Although Elliott could be a contender in light of his past success on road courses, he\u2019s far from a shoo-in. So for the sake of argument and, given all the unknowns, the odds don\u2019t favor Elliott in the Windy City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That leaves four upcoming tracks where Elliott has won a race in NASCAR Cup Series competition. The term \u201cwon\u201d is being used pretty loosely here, however, considering that while the history books show Elliott as a past winner at Pocono, he\u2019s never actually taken the checkered flag running P1 at the triangle-shaped Pennsylvania track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nobody-won-sundays-mess-pocono-not-even-chase-elliott\/\">Elliott was merely declared the winner<\/a> of last August\u2019s race at Pocono when NASCAR disqualified the top-finishing cars of Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch after the two Toyotas both flunked post-race inspection for the same reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How Chase Elliott found out he won the Cup race at Pocono following the Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch disqualifications. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0CdJVT8Hj5\">pic.twitter.com\/0CdJVT8Hj5<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Matt Weaver (@MattWeaverRA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattWeaverRA\/status\/1551595206713266182?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, this leaves only three upcoming tracks where Elliott is a past winner in the purest sense. Those tracks are Watkins Glen, Nashville Superspeedway, and Atlanta Motor Speedway \u2014 the track not far from his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ranking-nascar-cup-series-top-5-road-course-racers-of-all-time\/\">But it\u2019s Watkins Glen, not Atlanta<\/a>, where Elliott has a significantly more favorable shot to get the win he so desperately needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History is overwhelmingly on Chase Elliott\u2019s side at Watkins Glen, but winning elsewhere seems like a stretch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chase Elliott has raced nine times at Atlanta Motor Speedway and finished in the top five just twice. While one of those top-fives was his lone victory at the 1.54-mile Georgia track, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/chase-elliott-sorry-not-sorry-about-actions-atlanta-joins-highly-exclusive-club-featuring-only-nascar-hall-of-famers\/\">where he beat Corey LaJoie in a thriller<\/a> last summer, his overall record at AMS isn\u2019t that impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chase Elliott wins in wild fashion as major crash ends race under caution | NASCAR ON FOX\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2aOJLACfQAw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the first Atlanta race of 2022, the track has also been much more of a crapshoot for drivers than it used to be due to a reconfiguration of the track that now makes it race much like a superspeedway \u2014 where just about anyone has a chance to win if they can somehow stay out of trouble and get the right push from the right drafting partner at the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All factors considered, Elliott is unlikely to prevail at Atlanta when the Cup Series returns there in July, even though he triumphed in his most recent start at the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Nashville, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/most-nascar-cup-series-wins-nashville-superspeedway\/\">Elliott is batting 1-of-2 at the 1.33-mile concrete oval<\/a> where the Cup Series first competed in 2021. After being disqualified from the inaugural Cup Series race at Nashville two years ago for having loose lug nuts in post-race inspection, Elliott came back in a big way last year when he won in the Music City but only led 42 of 300 laps.<br><br>His successful 2022 outing at Nashville notwithstanding, only two races at the track is a painfully small sample size on which to base a judgment about Elliott\u2019s chances of returning to Victory Lane at Nashville next weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chase Elliott conquers the concrete to win at Nashville | NASCAR ON FOX HIGHLIGHTS\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OiS1QbWRJvg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are, Elliott won\u2019t win at Nashville for the simple reason that drivers rarely go back-to-back at the same track. In other words, the odds are against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watkins Glen, however, is an entirely different story. In six Cup Series at the popular road course, Elliott has won twice and finished no worse than 13<sup>th<\/sup>. But even more impressive, perhaps, than his dominant, back-to-back victories at The Glen in 2018 and 2019 is the fact that he\u2019s finished no worse than fourth in his last four trips to the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After coming home second at The Glen in 2021 (the Cup Series didn\u2019t race here in 2020 due to restrictions in connection with COVID-19), Elliott was in position to score his third WGI victory last August when an <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kyle-larson-moving-chase-elliott-watkins-glen-shouldnt-surprise-anyone\/\">aggressive move by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson<\/a> on a late restart caused Elliott to run out of racing room and ultimately go from first to fourth almost in an instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Larson runs Elliott wide, takes the win at Watkins Glen\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nxbhZYtr4Y0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterward, Elliott refused to directly criticize his teammate \u2014 who held on for the win \u2014 but the 2020 Cup Series champion was clearly outraged by what had taken place, and the look on his face said what he didn\u2019t say with his mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Watch: Chase Elliott&#039;s post Watkins Glen interview\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MRJRtVUJPjM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott will have a chance to avenge that bitter defeat when the Cup Series returns to Watkins Glen on August 20.
