That should be of little consolation to one of the major success stories of the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 10 races left in the regular season, Chastain is a good bet to make the playoffs via points, but hardly automatic. That\u2019s why the upcoming weekend at Nashville Superspeedway means more to him than to most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ross-chastain-has-gone-42-races-without-a-win\"><strong>Ross Chastain has gone 42 races without a win<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Keeping it hot with the #1 crew. \ud83d\udd25<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RossChastain?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RossChastain<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/g1bwQWOwYO\">pic.twitter.com\/g1bwQWOwYO<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Trackhouse Racing (@TeamTrackhouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamTrackhouse\/status\/1670461378350522368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 18, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ross Chastain was the big story of the NASCAR season individually and team-wise by this juncture last year. The Florida watermelon farmer had scored his first two Cup Series wins at COTA and Talladega, and teammate Daniel Suarez further bolstered upstart <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/trackhouse-racing\/\">Trackhouse Racing<\/a> by winning at Sonoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither has won this year, though Chastain is in better shape because he sits fourth in points as opposed to Suarez in 17<sup>th<\/sup>. Chastain\u2019s issue is that he has gone 42 races without a victory, and he\u2019s running out of places to break through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, we\u2019ve been seeing a different driver since Darlington, where Chastain tried pressing Kyle Larson into the outside wall on a restart and ended up wrecking himself instead. The Hendrick Motorsports people declared it one act of aggression too many, and Trackhouse owner <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/justin-marks-admits-he-let-ross-chastain-go-too-far\/\">Justin Marks had a sit-down with his star<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Chastain has placed 22<sup>nd<\/sup> at Charlotte and World Wide Technology Raceway and 10<sup>th<\/sup> at Sonoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By process of elimination, Nashville may be Ross Chastain\u2019s best shot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bye, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RossChastain?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RossChastain<\/a>. \ud83d\udc4b<br><br>Hope you qualify really fast. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/n7s1MLt5au\">pic.twitter.com\/n7s1MLt5au<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Trackhouse Racing (@TeamTrackhouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamTrackhouse\/status\/1667658619310186497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, Ross Chastain is likely to make the playoffs on points, and he is positioned to pick up a half-dozen or more playoff points based on the final regular-season standings. He\u2019s also banked five playoff points from stage wins, but a race victory or two would certainly make his life easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem he faces is that the superspeedways (Atlanta and Daytona) are always crapshoots. Also, he\u2019s competent on road courses, but Watkins Glen and Indianapolis haven\u2019t been great for him, and the Chicago street race is an unknown for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, he\u2019s down to five other possibilities. Nashville Superspeedway looks like it might be the best option. He finished second there to a dominating Kyle Larson in 2021 and fifth last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The nightmare scenario for the No. 1 Chevy team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1250\" height=\"834\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Ross-Chastain-1.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=683&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Ross Chastain has gone ice cold on the Cup Series circuit. | Jonathan Bachman\/Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-1571268\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ross Chastain has gone ice cold on the Cup Series circuit. | Jonathan Bachman\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been 10 winners this season, and Ross Chastain, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, and Bubba Wallace are not among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chastain and Harvick are far ahead of the others in points. However, a run of first-time winners down the homestretch of the regular season could leave one or both in the same scenario that left Martin Truex on the outside looking in last year when only Ryan Blaney made it on points despite MTJ finishing fourth in the standings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Got a question or observation about racing?
