{"id":1572569,"date":"2023-06-19T12:48:52","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T16:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1572569"},"modified":"2023-06-19T12:48:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-19T16:48:53","slug":"single-hole-cost-dustin-johnson-real-shot-win-us-open-still-tied-impressive-tiger-woods-major-championship-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/single-hole-cost-dustin-johnson-real-shot-win-us-open-still-tied-impressive-tiger-woods-major-championship-record\/","title":{"rendered":"A Single Hole Cost Dustin Johnson a Real Shot to Win the U.S. Open But He Still Tied an Impressive Tiger Woods Major Championship Record"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Coming into the 2023 U.S. Open, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dustin-johnson-fires-shot-pga-tour-commish-following-liv-golf-win-australia\/\">Dustin Johnson<\/a> was easily one of the favorites on the lengthy layout at Los Angeles Country Club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, overall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/liv-golf\/\">LIV Golf<\/a> superstar played well, shooting 3-under for the week to finish in a tie for 10th, marking his 23rd top-10 in 56 major championship starts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes Johnson's finish even more impressive is the fact that he carded a quadruple bogey eight during Friday's second round, the highest single-hole score in the entire U.S. Open field up to that point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing the 490-yard, par-4 second, the 24-time <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/pga\/\">PGA Tour<\/a> winner hit his tee shot into the left fairway bunker. His ensuing shot from said bunker traveled just 95 yards before settling into the deep rough. After struggling to even locate his golf ball, Johnson then hit his third just 60 yards into a penalty area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After taking his drop, DJ had just 57 yards to the pin for his fifth but flew the putting surface, leaving himself an awkward chip back down a slope toward the hole. He finally hit the green on shot six, but his chip rolled 28 feet past the hole. Two putts later, Johnson had recorded a snowman. That's not fun when you lose a golf tournament by seven. But that's U.S. Open golf for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But outside the second hole, Dustin Johnson certainly had plenty of positives this week, most notably his opening-round 64, which essentially allowed him to stay in contention as long as he did as LACC toughened up as the week went along. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That round also helped him tie an impressive major championship record, one previously owned solely by <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/tiger-woods\/\">Tiger Woods<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dustin-johnson-tied-tiger-woods-for-the-most-major-championship-rounds-of-65-or-better\">Dustin Johnson tied Tiger Woods for the most major championship rounds of 65 or better<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2023 U.S. Open Highlights: Dustin Johnson, Round 1 | Every Televised Shot\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lm3Uc57_xPQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With a 6-under 64 to kick off his week, which was wildly only tied for the third-best round of the day as <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/when-was-last-time-rickie-fowler-won\/\">Rickie Fowler<\/a> and Xander Schauffele tied for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-is-the-lowest-single-round-score-in-u-s-open-history-and-who-shot-it\/\">lowest round in U.S. Open history<\/a>, Dustin Johnson tied Tiger Woods for the most rounds of 65 or better in a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/lowest-72-hole-scores-every-mens-golf-major-championship\/\">major championship<\/a> with 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DJ will have the opportunity to take the lead on his own next month at The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
