For reasons that NASCAR has never really bothered explaining, the sport has largely moved away from night races in the last few years in favor of more traditional Sunday afternoon time slots for its premier division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, one of the tracks that\u2019s bucking this trend is Nashville Superspeedway \u2014 the 1.33-mile concrete oval <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-nashville-week\/\">set to host Sunday\u2019s Ally 400<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in its three years as a Cup Series venue, Nashville is scheduled to turn the lights on for a Cup race and will do so when NASCAR\u2019s premier division convenes in the Music City this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re ready to shine under the bright lights of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NashvilleSuperS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NashvilleSuperS<\/a>. \ud83e\udd29<br><br>Send a \ud83d\ude4c if you can\u2019t wait for this weekend\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ally400?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ally400<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCAR?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCAR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wXqHMbCjlP\">pic.twitter.com\/wXqHMbCjlP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ally Racing (@allyracing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allyracing\/status\/1671879339930009601?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 22, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rest assured that the later start time \u2014 which track officials announced last November \u2014 is by design. And in just a moment, we\u2019ll explore some reasons why making this weekend\u2019s event a night race was quite simply a no-brainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pushing-nashville-s-start-time-back-is-doing-everyone-a-favor\">Pushing Nashville\u2019s start time back is doing everyone a favor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The green flag for Sunday\u2019s NASCAR Cup Series race in Lebanon, Tennessee, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/most-nascar-cup-series-wins-nashville-superspeedway\/\">just outside of Nashville<\/a>, is scheduled to wave shortly after 7 p.m. EST. That\u2019s roughly two hours later than this event\u2019s scheduled 2022 start time, and the change should make the summertime temperatures considerably more manageable for both fans and competitors alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ally 400 | NASCAR Cup Series Full Race Replay\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Thsf1e4tjXY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During last year\u2019s Cup Series weekend at Nashville, temperatures pushed into the mid-90s and created quite the sweltering environment for all in attendance. However, the temps dipped considerably in the Cup Series race \u2014 won by <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/Chase-Elliott\/\">Chase Elliott<\/a> \u2014 which was supposed to occur in the day but ended up being postponed to night due to persistent rain showers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Sunday\u2019s forecast calls for average daytime temperatures of 90 degrees in Lebanon, with a substantial drop-off to 69 degrees at night. While the entire race won\u2019t be run in the dark, at least half of it will \u2014 which will undoubtedly make conditions much more tolerable and lower the risk of those in attendance becoming overheated or dehydrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More forgiving weather isn\u2019t the only reason we should all be thankful for this weekend\u2019s revised schedule, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With Nashville now a night race, more NASCAR tracks will hopefully turn the lights on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nashville and Atlanta &#8212; two places where it is pretty hot in the summer &#8212; are Sunday night races this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PfOfNImlYB\">https:\/\/t.co\/PfOfNImlYB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1671616472458592257?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last season, NASCAR slated only four of 36 points races on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-things-nascar-nailed-3-things-nascar-botched-badly-2023-cup-schedule\/\">Cup Series calendar<\/a> to take place primarily after the sun went down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These races were the late summer race at Daytona, the fall night race at Bristol, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, and the Southern 500 at Darlington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, NASCAR made the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/racing-at-dirt-track-especially-on-easter-is-poor-use-of-everyones-time\/\">Bristol dirt race<\/a> (the one in the spring) a nighttime affair and did the same for the July Atlanta race and Sunday\u2019s event at Nashville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While seven night races aren\u2019t that many in the grand scheme of things, it\u2019s good to see NASCAR adding a few more races under the stars. And that\u2019s not just because night racing breeds cooler temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Under the Lights at Martinsville Speedway\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I_fpt5pChOk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also because night racing, generally speaking, is more exciting than day racing. Not only do races held after the sun goes down tend to make drivers more aggressive on the track and prone to retaliate if they believe they\u2019ve been wrongly drilled in the bumper or the door, but there\u2019s just something pretty cool about seeing sparks fly \u2014 both literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, it\u2019s just a matter of time before tracks that once hosted night races \u2014 like Richmond, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/martinsville-president-clay-campbell-shares-hilarious-dale-earnhardt-story-dishes-on-day-vs-night-racing-hot-dogs-more\/\">Martinsville<\/a>, and Texas \u2014 go back to prime time. But in the meantime, I\u2019m glad that NASCAR and Nashville have seen the light about having this Sunday\u2019s race go down in the dark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While NASCAR has largely moved away from night races, Nashville SuperSpeedway is bucking that trend.
