Mess with him unfairly on a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> track or on social media, and he\u2019ll put you into the wall \u2013 literally or figuratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A know-it-all learned that the hard way this week on Twitter, exactly where you\u2019d expect to find a cesspool of ill-advised commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kyle-larson-is-as-good-on-dirt-tracks-as-he-is-on-nascar-ovals\"><strong>Kyle Larson is as good on dirt tracks as he is on NASCAR ovals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some news. That\u2019s hardly unusual for Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion. He has two wins in the top-tier series midway through the current season, and he scored one on dirt on Wednesday in Brandon, South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That victory in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series over a field of 54 competitors earned Larson $20,000, which is admittedly chump change for a NASCAR champion. In fact, he\u2019s earned more than that in each of his three victories while moonlighting in the High Limit Sprint Car Series in the past five weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s lots more money to be made. A racing-related Twitter account posted prize lists for three prestigious dirt races with first prizes ranging from $185,000 to $1,002,023 and asked followers which race they would pick to compete in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where the fireworks began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Critic to Kyle Larson: \u2018Money you don\u2019t necessarily need\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last time I checked I fall into the category of \u201cprofessional race car driver\u201d. I race for a living just like the rest of them. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xUDeZRel2W\">https:\/\/t.co\/xUDeZRel2W<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FkD1pa4NSd\">pic.twitter.com\/FkD1pa4NSd<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Kyle Larson (@KyleLarsonRacin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleLarsonRacin\/status\/1671896699793731584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 22, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle Larson saw the tweet from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CouchRacerShop\/status\/1671610771627712513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@CouchRacerShop account<\/a> and was quick to chime in that he\u2019d choose all three, and he nominated a fourth race with a $175,000 top prize as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three hours later, a know-it-all piped in on the thread with a suggestion: \u201cHopefully you will share some of the money you win with the guys who are doing this for a living. Money you don\u2019t necessarily need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but I have no patience for strangers telling me what to do with my money. Hell, I barely tolerate suggestions along those lines from my family or friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the credit of the proverbial cooler heads, other followers of the account ratioed the idea that Larson should share his winnings with \u201cguys who are doing this for a living.\u201d  Then, the man who is arguably the best driver in American motorsports chimed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast time I checked I fall into the category of \u2018professional race car driver,\u2019\u201d Larson tweeted. \u201cI race for a living just like the rest of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Hendrick Motorsports star does his share of good<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"980\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Kyle-Larson-5.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=669&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Kyle Larson prior to the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race on May 21, 2023, at North Wilkesboro Speedway. | Jeff Robinson\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-1569382\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kyle Larson prior to the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race on May 21, 2023, at North Wilkesboro Speedway. | Jeff Robinson\/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s true Kyle Larson collects prize money that guys who will never race above the dirt-track level could be earning, his winning races here and there is dwarfed by what he brings to the table. For starters, his mere appearance at a local track boosts attendance that night and generates publicity that can have residual benefits for the track and raise future purses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, Larson and brother-in-law Brad Sweet have started the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlimitracing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">High Limit Spring Car Series<\/a>, with payouts that compare favorably with some World of Outlaws events. If High Limits takes off, WoO and other dirt-track circuits will have to up their game, which benefits all drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Larson took a principled stand at the start of the year by boycotting the Chili Bowl Nationals, one of the most prestigious events in dirt-track racing. Though the operator of the event makes a case that he\u2019s saddled with an unfavorable lease, Larson went on record as saying the prize money doesn\u2019t measure up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Larson brought attention to an issue that has been out there for some time but wasn\u2019t discussed enough until there was a big name associated with it. Combined with his other efforts, Larson deserves a pass on nonsensical criticism on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, even the tweeter who raised the criticism relented in a subsequent message on the thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKyle, point taken and understood,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt is nothing against you personally. You are without a doubt a professional.  You do amazing things with any race car as we have all seen.
