Yet to make a decision on his plans for 2024 is Aric Almirola, the driver of SHR\u2019s No. 10 Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almirola actually planned to retire at the end of last season and even announced his intentions to do as such before SHR officials convinced him to return for another year. But Almirola has <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/aric-almirola-drivers-seat-at-stewart-haas-racing\/\">remained noncommittal about his intentions beyond 2023<\/a>, which raises the question of who SHR will get to take his place if he decides to actually call it quits this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we\u2019ll look at four drivers who don\u2019t have firm plans for 2024 and would likely be considered for the No. 10 car if Almirola moves on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-zane-smith\">1. Zane Smith<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Final Laps: Zane Smith wins the 2022 Truck Series Title in Overtime thriller\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4lXZJ_nb7AE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, Zane Smith, is once again running the full truck schedule for Front Row Motorsports this year as he seeks to become only the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/zane-smith-run-toward-back-to-back-truck-series-titles-may-already-be-over\/\">second back-to-back champion<\/a> in series history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to that pursuit, Smith is making select NASCAR Cup Series starts this season for Front Row, where he\u2019s sharing a ride with Todd Gilliland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith would be a natural choice for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/stewart-haas-racing\/\">Stewart-Haas Racing\u2019s No. 10 Ford<\/a> for a few reasons. One is that he\u2019s already in the Ford family. Another is that he\u2019s enjoying another stellar season on the truck side, having gone to Victory Lane twice in 2023 after winning four races a season ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps most important of all, Smith has <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/zane-smith-continues-boost-his-top-prospect-status\/\">shown flashes of what he could accomplish<\/a> as a full-time Cup Series driver, having posted a pair of top-15 finishes \u2014 including a top-10 in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte \u2014 in his five Cup starts with Front Row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Todd Gilliland<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another driver that Stewart-Haas Racing might pursue as a replacement for Aric Almirola is the driver who\u2019s sharing a Cup Series ride with Zane Smith at Front Row Motorsports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would be Todd Gilliland, the son of retired NASCAR Cup Series driver David Gilliland. Despite learning before the season that he <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/losing-full-time-ride-has-actually-helped-todd-gilliland-become-better-driver\/\">wouldn\u2019t run a full schedule with Front Row<\/a> as he did in 2022, Gilliland has posted several strong results \u2014 including three top-10s and four top-15 finishes in a row from mid-March through early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, like Smith, Gilliland is already in the Ford family, which doesn\u2019t do anything to hurt his prospects as the future driver of SHR\u2019s No. 10 Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Michael McDowell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FINAL LAPS: McDowell avoids massive wreck to win the 2021 Daytona 500 | NASCAR ON FOX HIGHLIGHTS\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ey81TxUO6Ak?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/perception-reality-about-josh-berry-dont-match\/\">Josh Berry\u2019s appeal to Stewart-Haas Racing<\/a> was that the organization\u2019s decision-makers believe his experience \u2014 he\u2019s 32 years old and has been driving stock cars for well over a decade \u2014 will allow him to compete for wins and championships from Day One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If SHR wants to go a similar route in filling its next seat, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-mcdowell-might-not-actually-benefit-move-stewart-haas-racing\/\">Michael McDowell seems like an obvious candidate<\/a>. A 16-year veteran of the Cup Series, McDowell has spent his entire career in subpar equipment but enjoyed dramatic improvement over the last three years despite still lacking the resources of the sport\u2019s top-tier drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McDowell has just one win in 445 Cup Series starts, but it couldn\u2019t have come on a bigger stage than where it did \u2014 the 2021 Daytona 500. Last season, McDowell recorded a career-high 12 top-10 finishes, and he\u2019s posted three more top-10s in the first 16 races of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the biggest upside to hiring McDowell \u2014 his experience \u2014 might ironically be his biggest downside because, at 38 years old, he\u2019s just a few months younger than Almirola and also could be nearing retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Cole Custer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If Stewart-Haas Racing wants to keep its next hire in the family, Cole Custer would be the logical choice. After three mostly disappointing seasons in an SHR Cup Series car, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/cole-custer-did-too-little-to-save-no-41-ford-at-shr\/\">Custer lost his ride for 2023<\/a> but remained with the organization as one of its drivers in the Xfinity Series \u2014 where he went to Victory Lane nine times from 2017-2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Custer has responded well since his demotion, winning a race this season and being one of the Xfinity Series\u2019 top overall performers. Would Custer get another shot at a Cup Series ride with SHR if Almirola\u2019s seat became available next year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible. And it doesn\u2019t hurt that his father, Joe Custer, is SHR\u2019s co-president and may have some say in the matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In sports, there's no such thing as a sure bet.
