{"id":1573168,"date":"2023-06-24T18:25:31","date_gmt":"2023-06-24T22:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1573168"},"modified":"2023-06-24T18:25:32","modified_gmt":"2023-06-24T22:25:32","slug":"tony-stewart-connects-gambling-to-1-million-in-nascar-penalties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/tony-stewart-connects-gambling-to-1-million-in-nascar-penalties\/","title":{"rendered":"Tony Stewart Connects Gambling to $1 Million in NASCAR Penalties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When digesting the many thoughts of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/tony-stewart\/\">Tony Stewart<\/a>, it\u2019s worth remembering that the three-time Cup Series champion once went so far as to wonder whether races were <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tony-stewart-once-said-nascar-races-were-rigged-like-pro-wrestling\/\">rigged like professional wrestling matches<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again, he made that claim in 2007. It\u2019s hard to think of much he\u2019s said since that anyone in a position to know has credibly called BS on. So, our ears perked up when he made the connection between $1 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> fines this season and the explosion in legal sports wagering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cup-teams-have-made-a-fine-mess-out-of-the-2023-season\"><strong>Cup teams have made a \u2018fine mess\u2019 out of the 2023 season<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Excited to have this wheelman driving the famed 4 car for us. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ywveAXGMIj\">pic.twitter.com\/ywveAXGMIj<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Tony Stewart (@TonyStewart) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TonyStewart\/status\/1671605103214616576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 21, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Denny Hamlin, Daniel Suarez, and Chase Elliott have all taken hits from NASCAR already this season for antics on the track. However, discipline for that sort of behavior is relatively routine, and the transgressions are typically so obvious and unsafe that penalties are a foregone conclusion before the race is even over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/erik-jones-nascar-penalty-meaningless-next-1-could-be-killer\/\">Other penalties<\/a> aren\u2019t so obvious, and most of them don\u2019t even come to light until a couple of days after the race. That\u2019s because the violations are technical in nature \u2013 i.e., NASCAR found something wrong with the cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started in Phoenix when NASCAR confiscated hood louvers from the four Hendrick Motorsports cars and Justin Haley\u2019s Chevy. NASCAR set the fines at $100,000 per car. In the time since, Hendricks drivers Alex Bowman and William Byron got dinged at Texas Motor Speedway, and Austin Dillon, Tyler Reddick, Chase Briscoe, and Erik Jones have also been disciplined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all, Cup Series teams have been fined more than $1 million less than halfway through the season, with the money going to NASCAR\u2019s charities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tony Stewart connects NASCAR\u2019s fines to controlling drivers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Had an awesome time with the fans at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BristolDragway?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BristolDragway<\/a>. Can\u2019t wait to get back behind the wheel next week in Norwalk <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T6D1JuKoOs\">pic.twitter.com\/T6D1JuKoOs<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Tony Stewart (@TonyStewart) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TonyStewart\/status\/1668768828497752064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony Stewart\u2019s explanation for more than $1 million in fines to Cup Series teams this year: \u201cIt\u2019s all about control,\u201d the NASCAR Hall of Famer said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nascar.nbcsports.com\/2023\/06\/23\/friday-5-tony-stewart-discusses-nascar-penalties-charter-system-and-more-martin-truex-chase-elliott-denny-hamlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC Sports<\/a>. \u201cBefore we had timing lines on pit road, they had two people in the scoring booth with a stopwatch in each hand. You can only control four cars out of 43 cars down pit road. If you ruffled their feathers and upset them, you were probably going to get a pit road speeding penalty the next week. You could guarantee it. That was NASCAR\u2019s way of keeping everybody in check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, however, there\u2019s money on the line. Specifically, it\u2019s the money wagered by racing fans betting on race results through legal sportsbooks. The tiniest hint of impropriety by the people running the sport would destroy fans\u2019 trust, and live attendance and TV viewership would plummet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve backed themselves in a corner with the greed to the gambling side of this,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, his theory is that NASCAR settles scores if necessary in midweek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t call somebody for a pit road speeding penalty if they didn\u2019t commit the act. They can\u2019t control that. They can\u2019t throw bogus cautions to bunch the field back up. \u2026 How do you control everybody then if you\u2019ve taken that ability away during the race? How do you do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou do it at the R&amp;D Center after the races are over. If somebody\u2019s ruffling your feathers, that\u2019s where they\u2019re going to get you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, don\u2019t construe every penalty as settling a score.<\/p>\n<cite>Tony Stewart<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important that they do keep aspects of this in check,\u201d Stewart continued. \u201cYou can\u2019t lose control of that. If you do, it becomes a free-for-all and then they\u2019ve lost everything they\u2019ve built over 75 years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tony Stewart is OK with the size of NASCAR\u2019s financial penalties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Best of NASCAR: Hot Mic! Tony Stewart&#039;s top quotes\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hZroxOTx4jY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if he has his suspicions about the nature of some NASCAR penalties (zapping the Alex Bowman and William Byron Chevys after an appeals panel reinstated points for all four Hendrick Motorsports cars comes to mind), Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart has no quarrel with the size of the penalties, though the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar-displays-confiscated-counterfeit-part-14-car-reveals\/\">$250,000 fine to SHR\u2019s Chase Briscoe<\/a> was hard to swallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think if you want to get it under control, you\u2019ve got to keep bumping it up to where it\u2019s risk vs. reward,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat are you willing to risk to get in the gray areas? I support NASCAR on that side. I feel like they\u2019ve done a good job of trying to discourage teams from going above and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Got a question or observation about racing?
