It would have been his 50<sup>th<\/sup> in the Cup Series, which is obviously one of those big round numbers worthy of attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin didn\u2019t win on Sunday, but he made the 631<sup>st<\/sup> Cup Series start of his career, tying the driver of the No. 11 Toyota for 30<sup>th<\/sup> all-time with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/dale-earnhardt-jr\/\">Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a>, who called the race for NBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnhardt has already entered the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Hamlin will do so two years after he retires from full-time driving. Just for fun, we took a dive into the numbers to determine who\u2019s had the better career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dale-earnhardt-jr-and-denny-hamlin-share-a-common-frustration\"><strong>Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin share a common frustration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Denny Hamlin finished third at Nashville. He said the two best cars finished 1-2 (Chastain and Truex). <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7auFL7xsR2\">pic.twitter.com\/7auFL7xsR2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1673358758649659392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Winning is the goal each week in the 36-race Cup Series, but it\u2019s a means to an end rather than the ultimate goal. The big prize each year is the series title, determined in the playoff era by the Championship 4 race on the final weekend of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all their collective accomplishments, neither Dale Earnhardt Jr. nor Denny Hamlin ended a season with the big prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnhardt\u2019s best finish was third in the 2003 standings to Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. That was the year that Kenseth\u2019s single-win season inspired NASCAR to develop the first iteration of its playoff system. Earnhardt also finished fifth three times in his career before retiring in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin has come closer to the elusive prize, finishing second to Johnson in 2010. In addition, he has placed third on three occasions and in the top five an additional four times. The 42-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing driver missed a top-10 final place just once in the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Denny Hamlin owns the better Cup Series resume<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday I invented at least one new word during the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/XfinityRacing?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@XfinityRacing<\/a> broadcast. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K9ygvh7HwR\">pic.twitter.com\/K9ygvh7HwR<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Dale Earnhardt Jr. (@DaleJr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DaleJr\/status\/1673040390180712448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 25, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Denny Hamlin\u2019s superiority to Dale Earnhardt Jr. in raw Cup Series numbers is indisputable, beginning with his 49 victories, 212 finishes in the top five, and 327 results in the top 10. Earnhardt\u2019s numbers are solid \u2013 26, 149, and 260, respectively \u2013 but not a match for Hamlin\u2019s body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few annual races stand above the rest in terms of importance, and Hamlin\u2019s resume checks multiple boxes: Daytona 500 wins in 2016, \u201919, and \u201920; Southern 500 victories in 2017 and \u201921; and last season\u2019s Coca-Cola 600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, Earnhardt owns Daytona 500 triumphs in 2004 and \u201914 but none in the other marquee events like the Brickyard 400.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breaking down their head-to-head results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1049\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Dale-Earnhardt-Jr-Denny-Hamlin-2008.jpg?w=925&#038;strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin practice an ice cream throwing stunt backstage prior to their appearance on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' during the NASCAR Chase Media Tour on Sept. 10, 2008, in New York City.  | Mike Stobe\/Getty Images for NASCAR\" class=\"wp-image-1573329\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin practice an ice cream throwing stunt backstage prior to their appearance on &#8216;Live with Regis and Kelly' during the NASCAR Chase Media Tour on Sept. 10, 2008, in New York City.  | Mike Stobe\/Getty Images for NASCAR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. appeared in their first NASCAR Cup Series race together in the Banquet 400 at Kansas Speedway late in the 2005 season. They last went <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racing-reference.info\/compare-drivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">head-to-head<\/a> in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami to wrap up the 2017 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In total, Hamlin scored the better finish 222 times to 192 for Earnhardt. He also won more often in that timeframe (29-10), held the  advantage (202-169) in top-10 results, and posted a slightly superior average finish (14.4-15.5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnhardt\u2019s only advantages over Hamlin came in the Xfinity Series, where he scored series championship in 1998 and \u201999 and forged a 24-17 advantage in wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Got a question or observation about racing?
