{"id":1573695,"date":"2023-06-29T14:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-29T18:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1573695"},"modified":"2023-06-29T15:56:24","modified_gmt":"2023-06-29T19:56:24","slug":"3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-chicago-week-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-chicago-week-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Cup Series Drivers Who Are Hot and 3 Who Are Not: Chicago Week Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s an exciting week for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series drivers as the sport\u2019s premier division ventures to a street course for the first time in NASCAR\u2019s 75-year history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before they turn \u2018em loose on the streets of Chicago, here\u2019s a look at three drivers who are hot and a trio of others who are not after this past weekend\u2019s showdown at Nashville Superspeedway where <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ross-chastain-trackhouse-racing-treated-nashville-way-hendrick-motorsports-treats-martinsville\/\">Ross Chastain captured the win<\/a> but needs to do a bit more to be justifiably placed in the \u201chot\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hot-martin-truex-jr\">Hot: Martin Truex Jr.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Are you not entertained?! Please join us in wishing the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCAR?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCAR<\/a> Champion a very happy birthday \ud83c\udf82 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ti7M5vQTOW\">pic.twitter.com\/Ti7M5vQTOW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Joe Gibbs Racing (@JoeGibbsRacing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeGibbsRacing\/status\/1674432836827488260?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who really thought Martin Truex Jr. was all washed up after his tough 2022 must be feeling pretty silly about now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since his <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/martin-truex-jr-suddenly-seems-more-likely-to-renew-contract\/\">May 1 win at Dover<\/a> that snapped a winless stretch dating back 59 races, the newly-turned 43-year-old driver has been on a complete tear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How much of a tear? Well, Truex has posted four consecutive top-five finishes, including a second-place finish this past weekend at Nashville. Just as telling, Truex\u2019s only result outside of the top eight in the last seven events was a 31<sup>st<\/sup>-place finish at Darlington, where he was involved in a crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an 18-point lead over second-place William Byron in the standings, Truex is well-positioned to capture the regular season title in nine weeks and significantly pad his already robust number of playoff points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot: Kyle Larson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not as fast in recent races as he was earlier in the season, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kyle-larson-returns-fire-like-a-pro-after-being-called-out\/\">Kyle Larson continues to impress<\/a> and is actually finishing well on a more consistent basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being without a win in a points race since his victory at Martinsville on April 16, the 2021 Cup Series champion recorded his third consecutive top-10 finish with a fifth-place showing at Nashville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the first time all year Larson has come home in the top 10 in three straight races, and it\u2019s a sure sign that his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team is hitting on all cylinders, both literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot: Chase Elliott<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Raise a glass to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chaseelliott?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ChaseElliott<\/a> racing his way to a P4 finish in Nashville \u2757\ud83e\udd64 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/D6vYv5epry\">pic.twitter.com\/D6vYv5epry<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Coca-Cola Racing (@CocaColaRacing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CocaColaRacing\/status\/1673153691065393152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although still needing a win to solidify a playoff berth, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/Chase-Elliott\/\">Chase Elliott<\/a> seems to finally be on the upswing in a season that\u2019s been physically and emotionally taxing, to say the least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott, who\u2019s missed six races due to injury and one race while serving a suspension, has finished seventh or better in four of his last five starts and has come home fourth and fifth, respectively, since returning from his one-race suspension for deliberately wrecking Denny Hamlin in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>While the Hendrick Motorsports driver still faces an uphill climb to make the playoffs, he\u2019s truly trending in the right direction for the first time all year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Chase Briscoe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASCAR displays counterfeit part from Chase Briscoe car\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ic9c1qrNbCc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/chase-briscoe-didnt-deserve-multi-year-contract-extension-with-stewart-haas-racing\/\">Chase Briscoe\u2019s miserable 2023<\/a> remains in full swing despite a crew chief change on his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford ahead of last weekend\u2019s race at Nashville, where he took the checkered flag running 31<sup>st<\/sup> and two laps down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Briscoe \u2014 who lost 120 points with a penalty for a counterfeit part on his car at Charlotte \u2014 is 31<sup>st<\/sup> in the standings and seems to have hit rock bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His only hope of salvaging a decent season is to somehow win one of the final nine regular season races and punch a playoff ticket, although that seems highly improbable at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Tyler Reddick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Times are currently lean for Tyler Reddick, who has cooled off dramatically since an early-season hot streak highlighted by three top-fives that included <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tyler-reddick-highlights-winners-from-cota-give-denny-hamlin-his-due\/\">a win at Circuit of The Americas<\/a> in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first-year 23XI Racing driver has placed 30<sup>th<\/sup> or worse in his last three starts and outside of the top 20 in four of his last five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the fortunes of Reddick \u2014 one of the Cup Series\u2019 top road-course racers \u2014 will finally change this weekend when Cup drivers go street-course racing in downtown Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Ryan Blaney<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ryan Blaney suffers hard front-end impact at Nashville Superspeedway | Motorsports on NBC\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bPKSXZIN26Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ryan-blaneys-coke-600-win-debunked-the-notion-that-he-has-a-major-weakness\/\">winning at Charlotte<\/a> on Memorial Day and following up with a sixth-place finish the next weekend at Gateway, Ryan Blaney has fallen on hard times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After finishing 31<sup>st<\/sup> on the road course at Sonoma, the Team Penske driver wrecked out of Sunday\u2019s race at Nashville and was scored with a 36<sup>th<\/sup>-place result \u2014 his worst of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although uninjured, Blaney was shaken up a bit at Nashville when his No. 12 Ford hit a part of the inside retaining wall that wasn\u2019t covered with SAFER barrier. Later, while addressing reporters about his accident, the second-generation Cup Series driver took issue with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nashville-serious-safety-problems-nascar-most-embarrassingly-negligent-moment-year-result\/\">lack of safety measures<\/a> in place and even offered to personally pay to have the area he struck be covered in soft-wall technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While the NASCAR Cup Series may be heading north to Chicago, there are plenty of hot drivers who will be looking to make a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":259,"featured_media":1573736,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[253795],"tags":[118377,16060],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.3 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
