Well, that\u2019s anyone\u2019s best guess, given that no Cup Series driver has ever competed on this layout, or a street course of any kind, in a NASCAR event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, here\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/3-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-3-who-are-not-chicago-week-edition\/\">educated prognostication of the five drivers<\/a> with the best chance of crossing the finish line P1 and leaving the Windy City a winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-aj-allmendinger\">5. AJ Allmendinger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FINAL LAPS: A.J. Allmendinger avoids carnage to win in WILD overtime finish | NASCAR ON FOX\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sGcJJQ4VHvE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/aj-allmendinger-delivers-seasons-first-message-and-reveals-surprising-news\/\">AJ Allmendinger<\/a> doesn\u2019t win very often in NASCAR\u2019s top division \u2014 it\u2019s happened just twice in over 400 starts \u2014 but when it does, you can almost count on it being at a road course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of Allmendinger\u2019s Cup Series triumphs have come on tracks where drivers have to turn both right and left, which will be the case on Sunday when they hit the streets of downtown Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is Allmendinger <em>the<\/em> favorite to win? Probably not. But anytime the Cup Series shows up at a road course \u2014 or, in this case, a street course \u2014 you should count on the Kaulig Racing driver being in the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChicago is going to be very interesting,\u201d Allmendinger, a former open-wheel driver in INDYCAR and the now-defunct Champ Car World Series, said in a news release from Team Chevy PR. \u201cA street course takes me back to my roots of racing open wheel and being at a lot of different street courses. I think it\u2019s a venue that, if it\u2019s put on right, we can have a great weekend there as an industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a race track that a small mistake can have a huge penalty when it\u2019s that narrow and surrounded by concrete walls. Anything can happen, and we\u2019re not really sure what to expect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Kyle Busch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#39;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleBusch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KyleBusch<\/a> went there regarding a certain a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chicagobulls?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ChicagoBulls<\/a> legend. \ud83e\udd2f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UUCL4qvhWo\">pic.twitter.com\/UUCL4qvhWo<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCARonNBC\/status\/1674467262965882881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 29, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of two active drivers with a quartet of road course wins on his Cup Series resume, Kyle Busch is a highly skilled road racer who boasts a history of success on layouts that involve making both right-hand and left-hand turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How that translates for the two-time Cup Series champion on Sunday remains to be seen, of course, but Busch \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/carl-edwards-was-stunned-to-see-fans-perception-of-kyle-busch-has-changed-dale-jr-explained\/\">a three-time winner in his first season with Richard Childress Racing<\/a> \u2014 is eager to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe the Chicago street race will be one of the most challenging races that Cup has ever seen for sure,\u201d Busch said in a Team Chevy release. \u201cYeah, we\u2019re racing cars that were kind of made for road racing, but they\u2019re still 3,600 pounds and big, heavy stock cars, and we\u2019re trying to run them on streets and rough streets at that. Really tight, 90-degree corners, so everything is going to be super, super close action, tight quarters, bumping and banging, and probably hitting some barriers here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a heck of a show and a very interesting one at that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Tyler Reddick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Garth Brooks AND Michael Jordan?!<br><br>Two legends joined Tyler Reddick in Nashville for a pic. \ud83c\udfb8 \ud83c\udfc0 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3BvWZxPL3w\">pic.twitter.com\/3BvWZxPL3w<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCARonNBC\/status\/1672666718357839874?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 24, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tyler-reddick-highlights-winners-from-cota-give-denny-hamlin-his-due\/\">A winner of three road course races<\/a> over the past season-and-a-half, Tyler Reddick seems to have a knack for turning left and right that few of his peers share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Reddick\u2019s talent on road courses should undoubtedly help his cause this weekend, it also doesn\u2019t hurt that it was with the Chicago Bulls that his boss \u2014 Michael Jordan, who co-owns 23XI Racing with Denny Hamlin \u2014 won six NBA championships and made a strong case to be considered the greatest basketball player of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Jordan shows up at the track this weekend, it would be the ultimate fairytale for him to end up spraying champagne with Reddick in Victory Lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But given how well Reddick has done on road courses in recent times, this scenario isn\u2019t farfetched. In fact, it\u2019s a real possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Chase Elliott<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We can\u2019t wait for this race! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCAR?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCAR<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Km4PlSZ1FK\">pic.twitter.com\/Km4PlSZ1FK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NBC Sports Bet (@NBCSportsBet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCSportsBet\/status\/1674826865201102899?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NASCAR\u2019s resident king of the road, Chase Elliott owns a Cup Series-high seven victories on non-oval layouts, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver surprisingly hasn\u2019t prevailed on a road course since 2021 when he won at both Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas and Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Elliott returns to his winning ways on non-ovals this weekend, his timing will be nearly impeccable since he\u2019s running out of opportunities to secure the triumph he needs to punch a ticket into the 2023 Cup Series playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott, of course, can\u2019t make the playoffs based on points because he\u2019s buried deep in the standings after missing seven races earlier in the year due to a combination of unfortunate circumstances that included a 1-race suspension for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/after-not-owning-careless-move-on-denny-hamlin-chase-elliott-has-credibility-problem\/\">deliberately wrecking Denny Hamlin at Charlotte<\/a> in the Coca-Cola 600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Martin Truex Jr.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Truex dominates Sonoma: \u2018Hats off to my team\u2019\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EMp-AdiPKWI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With his recent win on the road course at Sonoma Raceway, Martin Truex Jr. broke a three-way tie with Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch for second-most victories on a road course among active NASCAR Cup Series drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s with that momentum \u2014 and the momentum that Truex, now the series points leader, has been building all season \u2014 that the Joe Gibbs Racing driver and 2017 Cup Series champion arrives in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a new ballgame for all of us,\u201d Truex, who owns five career wins on road courses and has <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/martin-truex-jr-suddenly-seems-more-likely-to-renew-contract\/\">triumphed twice overall in 2023<\/a>, said this week in a team news release. \u201cI\u2019ve never raced on a street course or anything like it. Of course, with stock cars, there hasn\u2019t been a lot of that in general. We did a little iRacing on that course a few years ago. We\u2019ve been doing some simulator work, trying to get some kind of feel for it. It\u2019s going to be a big challenge. \u201cI feel like in my mind it\u2019s going to be pretty difficult and bumpy. These cars aren\u2019t great on bumpy tracks, so I think they are going to be a handful and hard to figure out.
