{"id":1574233,"date":"2023-07-05T12:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T16:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1574233"},"modified":"2023-07-05T12:39:06","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T16:39:06","slug":"4-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-4-who-are-not-atlanta-week-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/4-cup-series-drivers-who-are-hot-4-who-are-not-atlanta-week-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Cup Series Drivers Who Are Hot and 4 Who Are Not: Atlanta Week Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After a wet but ultimately successful weekend of racing on the Chicago street course, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series returns to its roots this weekend with a trip to the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway quad-oval in Hampton, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up next are four drivers who are trending hot and four others who are not so hot \u2014 and whose season may go completely to pot if they can\u2019t get things turned around quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hot-kyle-busch\">Hot: Kyle Busch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kyle Busch explains what happened when he ran into the tire barrier in Turn 6 on the third lap of the race. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/f823DqkNzU\">pic.twitter.com\/f823DqkNzU<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobpockrass\/status\/1675895841649836032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Without question, the hottest driver in the NASCAR Cup Series at the moment is Kyle Busch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the two-time Cup champion and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/carl-edwards-was-stunned-to-see-fans-perception-of-kyle-busch-has-changed-dale-jr-explained\/\">first-year Richard Childress Racing driver<\/a> has ripped off six consecutive top-10 finishes, including three top-fives and a June 4 win at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Busch has also led at least one lap in four of the last five events, the only exception being this past weekend on the Chicago street course where he finished fifth after battling back from early adversity in the form of an excursion into a tire barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot: Kyle Larson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A paragon of consistency in recent times after struggling to finish well with any degree of regularity earlier in the season, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/kyle-larson\/\">Kyle Larson<\/a> rides into Atlanta this weekend carrying the momentum of four consecutive top-10 finishes that include three top-fives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Larson\u2019s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy doesn\u2019t seem to have quite the speed it did in the first quarter of the 2023 campaign, the 2021 Cup Series champ is well-positioned for a run at his second series crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot: Chase Elliott<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chaseelliott?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@chaseelliott<\/a> finishes P3 for the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCARChicago?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCARChicago<\/a> Street Race \u2757 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Epd9wJjl1B\">pic.twitter.com\/Epd9wJjl1B<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Coca-Cola Racing (@CocaColaRacing) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CocaColaRacing\/status\/1675684049350795267?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since returning from a one-race suspension for deliberately wrecking Denny Hamlin in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Chase Elliott has finished fifth, fourth, and third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While earning a berth in the playoffs remains far from certain for the Hendrick Motorsports driver after missing seven of the first 15 races, he\u2019s climbing fast \u2014 and might even be able to race his way into the playoffs without <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/watkins-glen-is-looking-like-chase-elliott-only-good-chance-to-punch-playoff-ticket\/\">winning one of the final eight regular-season races<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elliott is currently 55 points from the playoff cutline, which is a steep but not insurmountable margin to overcome in the time he has left to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot: Michael McDowell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever so quietly, Michael McDowell has been on a roll as of late. No, the veteran driver isn\u2019t setting the proverbial woods on fire, but that\u2019s pretty hard to do when you\u2019re in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-mcdowell-might-not-actually-benefit-move-stewart-haas-racing\/\">equipment supplied by Front Row Motorsports<\/a> \u2014 at best a third-tier team and one that lacks the funding and personnel of the Cup Series\u2019 major players.<br><br>In spite of being at a competitive disadvantage to more than half of the field, McDowell \u2014  whose lone Cup Series victory in 447 starts to date came in the 2021 Daytona 500 \u2014 has finished seventh twice and come home ninth in three of the last four races, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, he\u2019s pulled within 10 points of being in the cutoff spot for entry into the 2023 Cup Series playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Alex Bowman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s truly been a tale of two seasons for Alex Bowman. There was the season before he <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alex-bowman-took-hit-more-nascar-drivers-may-feel\/\">suffered a compression fracture of his vertebra<\/a> while competing in a sprint car race on April 25, and there\u2019s been the season since his return from a three-race absence that was necessary for his body to heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alex Bowman had help from Denny Hamlin. \ud83d\ude2c <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NASCARChicago?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NASCARChicago<\/a> | NBC and Peacock <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4oUs2c1cGg\">pic.twitter.com\/4oUs2c1cGg<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCARonNBC\/status\/1675656447902855168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to his injury, Bowman recorded six top-10 finishes \u2014 including three top-fives \u2014 in 10 starts. In five starts since jumping back behind the wheel of his No. 48 Chevrolet, the Hendrick Motorsports driver has finished no better than 12<sup>th<\/sup>. Notably, Bowman placed a season-worst 37<sup>th<\/sup> on Sunday at the Chicago street course, where he spun from contact with Denny Hamlin and ended up with a DNF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more troubling than this, though, might be the fact that Bowman qualifying for the playoffs \u2014 which at one point in the season seemed like a foregone conclusion \u2014 is now iffy at best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having overall one of the best seasons of his career as a Cup Series driver, veteran Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has hit a bit of a rough patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How rough? Put it this way: The JTG Daugherty Racing driver, who started the year with a bang by winning the Daytona 500, hasn\u2019t posted a top-10 since taking the checkered flag in seventh at the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the four races since, Stenhouse \u2014 who\u2019s locked into the playoffs with his Daytona win \u2014 has finished no better than 12<sup>th<\/sup> and ranked outside of the top 20 on three occasions that included two finishes outside the top 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, any positive momentum Stenhouse had left over from his shocking Daytona 500 triumph is <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ricky-stenhouse-jr-surprising-daytona-500-win-wont-turn-tide-overall-disappointing-careers\/\">more than gone at this point<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Bubba Wallace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The love from Chicago was real and heartfelt! Hope y\u2019all are <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCAR?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NASCAR<\/a> fans for life now! \ud83e\udd18\ud83c\udffe<\/p>&mdash; Bubba Wallace (@BubbaWallace) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BubbaWallace\/status\/1675697607987847168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just over a month ago, Bubba Wallace was enjoying the most consistency he\u2019s ever enjoyed as a NASCAR Cup Series driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, for the first time in his career, Wallace had rung up <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bubba-wallace-has-proven-he-belongs-now-he-needs-to-make-case-hes-elite\/\">three top-five finishes in a row<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in four starts since then, the 23XI Racing driver has finished 30<sup>th<\/sup> or worse on two occasions and taken the checkered flag running no better than 15<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news for Wallace is that he remains on the right side of the playoff cutline. The bad news is that his cushion is shrinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not: Kevin Harvick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>His last season as a NASCAR Cup Series driver now halfway complete, Kevin Harvick ranks highest in the standings among drivers who haven\u2019t been to Victory Lane this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not surprisingly, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver and 2014 Cup Series champion is, therefore, a virtual lock to reach the playoffs <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/with-all-due-respect-to-kevin-harvick-its-high-time-he-decided-to-hang-it-up\/\">in his farewell tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s looking more and more doubtful, however, that Harvick will win a race before he hangs it up. That\u2019s because he\u2019s trending in the wrong direction after  going three races in a row without a top-10 finish and crossing the finish line P29 and P24, respectively, his last two times out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who survived a wet weekend in Chicago with their hot streak intact?
