An intriguing \u2013 albeit indirect \u2013 connection to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/u-s-formula-1-fans-just-experienced-their-best-day-since-sept-10-1978-because-of-michael-andretti\/\">Michael Andretti<\/a> suggests this might be his proverbial foot in the door for joining the Cup Series as an owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s conjecture at best. But enough pieces fit together to revive the speculation about the prominent racing figure\u2019s pathway to both Formula 1 and NASCAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-talk-about-michael-andretti-and-nascar-has-been-out-there-for-years\"><strong>Talk about Michael Andretti and NASCAR has been out there for years<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">One of the best camera angles that never gets used here in 1994 with Michael Andretti as he fights with rookie Jacques Villeneuve <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Indycar?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Indycar<\/a> Mid Ohio <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/H7k15q7Oax\">pic.twitter.com\/H7k15q7Oax<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Champweb (@champwebdotnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/champwebdotnet\/status\/1674030175003217921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of the family name and his own accomplishments as a driver and owner requires racing observers to take notice when Michael Andretti\u2019s name pops up in conjunction with racing news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andretti Autosport cars have won the Indianapolis 500 five times and the IndyCar Series title four times, and the organization has a presence in several other series around the world. And though he raced a season in Formula 1, that series and NASCAR have been notably absent from the organization\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andretti has spent the past two years campaigning first to buy a stake in an F1 team, then proposing to start one from scratch. He\u2019s been asked frequently if <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-andretti-nascar-welcome-warmer-than-formula-1-hostility\/\">NASCAR also fits into his plans<\/a>, and the response has been that he needs to get F1 squared away first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might be the week where his vision for expansion finally takes root on both fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Michael Andretti is a step closer to his Formula 1 dream<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/F1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#F1<\/a>: Does Michael Andretti\/General Motors have a legitimate shot at joining the F1 grid? What <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ben_Sulayem?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Ben_Sulayem<\/a> told me today about the expressions of interest process: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dP9d4RR8w5\">https:\/\/t.co\/dP9d4RR8w5<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Jenna Fryer (@JennaFryer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JennaFryer\/status\/1676678208010301443?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/f1-andretti-expansion-sulayem-general-motors-d34efb8f46a261a56cf111b0ab08ac9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported this week that Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, says the bid submitted by Andretti Global in collaboration with General Motors stands out over proposals from at least five other hopefuls should a Formula 1 expansion be approved later in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have in the regulations that we can go up to 12 teams,\u201d Ben Sulayem said.  \u201cI\u2019m not breaking (rules). But do we allow anyone to enter? No. But how on earth can we refuse GM?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though American-based Liberty Media operates Formula 1, it is up to the FIA to decide whether the international series can expand beyond the current 10 teams. Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei recently reversed himself by saying expansion could be welcomed. The remaining obstacle for Andretti is that most current F1 owners do not see the $200 million expansion fee as sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Andretti appears closer than at any point in the past two years to joining F1. If that happens, then entering the NASCAR Cup Series might be next even if it\u2019s not immediate. The deal covers 16 races, alternating between the two Chevys throughout the rest of the season. It is an unusually large commitment to pop up in midseason, likely helped by LaJoie\u2019s best start to a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the backstory is more interesting than the sponsorship details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gainbridge is operated by Group 1001, whose CEO and president is Dan Towriss. Under his leadership, Gainbridge has invested in event sponsorships and stadium naming rights. More significantly, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/news\/andretti-autosports-rapid-growth-has-been-spurred-by-surprise-co-owner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Towriss bought a stake<\/a> last year in Andretti Autosport, which went unnoticed until this spring\u2019s IndyCar race at Long Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its interest in other racing series, Gainbridge hadn\u2019t signed a NASCAR sponsorship deal before underwriting Nick Sanchez\u2019s ride in the Craftsman Truck Series this season. The combination of that deal and the late partnership with Spire Motorsports so late in the year is interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s still a big leap from sponsoring cars to taking an ownership stake in a team. Still, the timing of the news Andretti might be close to his Formula 1 deal, followed by his new partner taking an aggressive step into NASCAR feels more than coincidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no reason to believe anything dramatic might happen while Cup Series owners are negotiating with NASCAR on their next contract, but the Gainbridge connection to Spire bears watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Got a question or observation about racing?
