{"id":1574573,"date":"2023-07-08T19:18:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-08T23:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1574573"},"modified":"2023-07-08T19:18:19","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T23:18:19","slug":"josh-berry-solid-pick-replace-kevin-harvick-but-cant-fix-stewart-haas-racing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/josh-berry-solid-pick-replace-kevin-harvick-but-cant-fix-stewart-haas-racing\/","title":{"rendered":"Josh\u00a0Berry\u00a0is a Solid Pick to Replace Kevin Harvick, But He Alone Can\u2019t Fix Stewart-Haas Racing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When Stewart-Haas Racing recently announced that NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Josh Berry would replace retiring Kevin Harvick next season in the No. 4 SHR Ford, the move was lauded as a match made in heaven by most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berry, after all, isn\u2019t going to be your typical NASCAR Cup Series rookie since <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/perception-reality-about-josh-berry-dont-match\/\">he\u2019ll be 33 years old<\/a> when the 2024 season begins and has been racing stock cars for 14 years. Given all this, it\u2019s no wonder that many observers \u2014 including SHR co-owner and three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart \u2014 view Berry as a safe pick to fill the seat of one of the sport\u2019s biggest stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think Berry will come in and win seven races and the championship in his rookie season, though, you\u2019re setting yourself up for a major disappointment. While his talent and experience are undeniable, he won\u2019t fix everything wrong with Stewart-Haas Racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stewart-haas-racing-hasn-t-been-elite-in-quite-some-time\">Stewart-Haas Racing hasn\u2019t been elite in quite some time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Tony Stewart Values Talent Over Money | Door Bumper Clear\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HWb4HPMsZIU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Several years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/top-4-candidates-to-join-josh-berry-as-stewart-haas-racing-newcomer-if-aric-almirola-retires\/\">Stewart-Haas Racing<\/a> was typically mentioned in the same breath as NASCAR\u2019s perennial powerhouse organizations: Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Team Penske.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This take was certainly justified given that SHR won a bundle of races and two Cup Series championships \u2014 one with team co-owner Tony Stewart in 2011, the other with Kevin Harvick in 2014 \u2014 in its first six years of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those days are gone now. Long gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the beginning of the 2021 season, the four-car operation has captured a total of four Cup Series victories \u2014 two by Kevin Harvick. With half of the 2023 season in the books, SHR is still searching for its first victory, and Harvick will, in all probability, be the only one of the organization\u2019s four drivers to make the playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In-car: Ryan Preece makes hard contact with Kyle Larson | NASCAR | Talladega\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o3dMIrPQtCk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SHR\u2019s other three drivers \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/chase-briscoe-didnt-deserve-multi-year-contract-extension-with-stewart-haas-racing\/\">Chase Briscoe, Ryan Preece,<\/a> and Aric Almirola \u2014 have combined for five top-10 finishes, only three of them top-5s. Meanwhile, fellow Ford organization Team Penske has gone to Victory Lane with two of its three drivers, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney, and both of those drivers are playoff-bound and in the top 10 of the series standings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, clearly, Ford isn\u2019t the problem here. The problem is that Stewart-Haas Racing is behind the eight ball and has been for some time \u2014 even going back to before the rollout of the Next Generation Cup Series car in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of SHR\u2019s struggles over the last two-and-a-half seasons, should anyone really expect Josh Berry \u2014 a driver with a total of 10 Cup Series starts to his credit \u2014 to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-jr-stewart-haas-racing-almost-kind-of-like-cheating\/\">come out of the gate swinging<\/a> and outperform the legendary driver he\u2019s replacing, Kevin Harvick, in Year 1?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s about as likely to happen as B.J. McLeod winning the championship or me winning the lottery. In other words, it\u2019s all but impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Josh Berry\u2019s 2023 Xfinity Series efforts have failed to impress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Moving 4WARD: Josh Berry Takes The Wheel Of The No. 4 Car In 2024 | Stewart-Haas Racing\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aNqk-FgYtnI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The problems Stewart-Haas Racing has experienced since 2021 aren\u2019t the only reason expectations should be lowered all around for Josh Berry\u2019s rookie season in the NASCAR Cup Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other reason is that Berry, in reality, just hasn\u2019t been that impressive in his second and final season as a full-time driver for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Berry collected three wins and secured a berth in the Championship 4 in Year 1 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-doesnt-want-josh-berry-driving-for-him-cup-series\/\">company co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a>, Year 2 hasn\u2019t gone nearly as well.
