{"id":1574883,"date":"2023-07-14T23:13:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-15T03:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1574883"},"modified":"2023-07-15T00:54:25","modified_gmt":"2023-07-15T04:54:25","slug":"4-nascar-cup-series-drivers-hot-not-new-hampshire-race-weekend-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/4-nascar-cup-series-drivers-hot-not-new-hampshire-race-weekend-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"4 NASCAR Cup Series Drivers Who Are Hot and 4 Who Are Not: New Hampshire Race Weekend Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> Cup Series\u2019 traveling circus is on a northern trek and New Hampshire-bound after a weekend of highly entertaining racing in the deep south at Atlanta Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a quick look at four drivers who are hot and four who are not before the sport\u2019s top division takes the green flag at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hot-william-byron\"><strong>Hot: William Byron<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"William Byron recovers from early mishap for NASCAR Cup Series Atlanta win | Motorsports on NBC\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0BC8JrPaxjs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing alone as the only driver with four wins in the first 19 races of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/william-byron\/\">William Byron<\/a> \u2014 one could argue \u2014 has been hot all year, aside from the first two races in which he finished 34th and 25th, respectively, and one three-stretch in which he failed to post a top-10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hendrick Motorsports driver, who sits atop the series standings with a 21-point buffer over Martin Truex Jr., certainly did nothing to diminish his status this past weekend when he captured <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascars-decision-end-atlanta-race-more-fair-than-chicago-call\/\">a rain-shortened victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the regular season entering its final stretch, Byron has amassed more playoff points than anyone and would begin the 10-race playoff seeded first among the 16 title contenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hot: AJ Allmendinger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s taken AJ Allmendinger roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/aj-allmendinger-finally-turned-things-around-sonoma-upcoming-nascar-schedule-works-favor\/\">half a season to heat up<\/a>, but the Kaulig Racing driver is dang near sizzling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going 14 races in a row without a top-10 finish upon opening the year with a sixth-place result in the Daytona 500, the \u2018Dinger \u2014 as the veteran driver is nicknamed \u2014 has ripped off three top-10s in his last four starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best of these came last time out, at Atlanta, where Allmendinger finished third in his No. 16 Chevy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hot: Michael McDowell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now one position and three points to the good side of the playoff cutline, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-mcdowell-luckiest-driver-atlanta\/\">Michael McDowell is on a midseason tear<\/a> with his unheralded, underfunded Front Row Motorsports team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McDowell, whose lone Cup Series victory in 448 starts came at the 2021 Daytona 500, has placed no worse than ninth in four of his last five starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 38-year-old driver heads into Sunday\u2019s race at New Hampshire riding the momentum of not just his current hot streak but also a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-mcdowell-luckiest-driver-atlanta\/\">season-best fourth-place finish<\/a> at Atlanta this past weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hot: Kyle Busch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udfb1 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyleBusch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@KyleBusch<\/a>&#39;s seven race, active top-10 streak:<br><br>- Series best<br>- Personal best since 2019 <br>- Team best for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCRracing?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RCRracing<\/a> since 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Wj7tHx8k1T\">pic.twitter.com\/Wj7tHx8k1T<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NASCAR (@NASCAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASCAR\/status\/1679626772839559171?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Good luck remembering the last time <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/Kyle-Busch\/\">Kyle Busch<\/a> left a race track without a top-10 finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assuming you\u2019ve forgotten, which would be perfectly understandable, it was May 7 at Kansas Speedway where the two-time Cup Series champion took the checkered flag 35th in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet after crashing out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Busch has since gone seven consecutive races with a top-10 outcome, the best of those results being a win from the pole at World Wide Technology Raceway on June 4. He currently holds the longest streak for top-10 finishes in the Cup Series this year, and it\u2019s not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not: Noah Gragson<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Noah Gragson vs. the Turn 6 tire barrier is NASCAR&#39;s new great rivalry.<\/p>&mdash; Jordan Bianchi (@Jordan_Bianchi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jordan_Bianchi\/status\/1675649856671473665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 2, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Times remain lean as can be for Noah Gragson, whose transition from full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series Racing a year ago to full-time Cup Series Racing in 2023 has been far more difficult than anyone ever imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After collecting eight Xfinity trophies on the way to a runner-up finish in the 2022 Xfinity standings, Gragson has yet to record a top-10 in his 18 starts with the Jimmie Johnson-co-owned organization that was rebranded as Legacy Motor Club ahead of the 2023 season. (The company formerly competed under the Petty GMS banner.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if things weren\u2019t already bad enough for Gragson, the rookie had to sit out the race at Sonoma last month while battling concussion-like symptoms. Gragson is 33rd in the standings, last among drivers who\u2019ve made more than 12 starts and well behind Chase Elliott, who\u2019s made a dozen starts in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not: Ty Gibbs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From one struggling rookie to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ty Gibbs has fared better than fellow newcomer and former Xfinity Series rival Noah Gragson, but it\u2019s been an uphill climb for the first-year full-time Cup Series driver nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grandson of legendary team owner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs is still searching for his first Cup Series top-five finish with Joe Gibbs Racing and has posted only one top-10 in the last 11 events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, Gibbs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ty-gibbs-proved-beyond-a-shadow-of-any-doubt-that-he-was-ready-for-move-to-the-nascar-cup-series\/\">the 2022 Xfinity Series champion<\/a> \u2014 has slid from the right side to the wrong side of the playoff cutline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not: Christopher Bell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No one was faster out of 2023's proverbial gate than Christopher Bell, whose season almost seemed to be a continuation of late 2022 when he won two of the final five races and earned his first-ever berth in the Championship 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After starting this season with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/christopher-bell-has-left-teammates-denny-hamlin-martin-truex-jr-ty-gibbs-in-the-dust-joe-gibbs-racing\/\">six top-six finishes in eight outings<\/a>, including a victory on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt, Bell has been mediocre recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How mediocre? Well, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver rolls into New Hampshire on the heels of a 23rd-place finish at Atlanta and an 18th-place result on the Chicago street course.
