{"id":1575371,"date":"2023-07-27T14:01:27","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T18:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1575371"},"modified":"2023-07-27T14:01:28","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T18:01:28","slug":"premier-nascar-feud-2023-cup-series-season-continue-richmond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/premier-nascar-feud-2023-cup-series-season-continue-richmond\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier NASCAR Feud of the 2023 Cup Series Season is Set to Continue at Richmond"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The next round of the leading <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar\/\">NASCAR<\/a> feud between <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/denny-hamlin\/\">Denny Hamlin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/kyle-larson\/\">Kyle Larson<\/a> could come quickly after the two tussled for the win in the closing laps of Sunday\u2019s NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin lined up in fourth place and second in line on the high side behind Larson on a restart with seven laps remaining in the 160-lap event at the 2.5-mile triangle in Pennsylvania. Hamlin dove low into Turn 1 to get underneath Larson and then nudged him up as they completed the turn \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/martin-truex-jr-calls-out-joe-gibbs-racing-teammate-denny-hamlin-dirty-move-pocono\/\">a move Martin Truex Jr. called &#8220;dirty.&#8221;<\/a> The contact sent Larson into the outside wall on the exit of the turn and damaged the No. 5 car to the point that it was no longer competitive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Larson finished 20th. It\u2019s just unfortunate,\u201d Larson said on pit road after the race, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nascar\/2023\/07\/23\/kyle-larson-furious-denny-hamlin-pocono-incident\/70454518007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today<\/a>. \u201cI feel like we\u2019ve had a handful of run-ins; I\u2019ve never had to reach out to apologize. He\u2019s always been the one that\u2019s reached out to me and been like, \u2018Hey man, I\u2019m sorry. I messed up there a little bit,\u2019 or \u2018Sorry, I put you in a bad spot,\u2019 or \u2018Sorry, I hurt your day.\u2019 I\u2019ve never had to do that to him. Sure, maybe there\u2019s been times he\u2019s been frustrated with me, but I\u2019ve never hurt his results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just mad right now. I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll say some dumb stuff on Monday night or whatever, and I\u2019ll get more mad for a little while and then I\u2019ll eventually get over it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin, meanwhile, defended his role in the controversy during his postrace press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe rules of going for a win [have] changed in the last 10 years,\u201d he said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nascar\/news\/nascar-crash-course-contact-between-denny-hamlin-and-kyle-larson-causes-tempers-to-run-hot-after-pocono\/\">CBS Sports<\/a>. \u201cLike, it\u2019s just different. People, just, like, well, it\u2019s what I had to do. That\u2019s what you hear, right? I didn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut I had to race hard for a win. Was I going to let off and give him all this extra room? Absolutely not. No way. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson are also two of the best active drivers in the series at Richmond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin has four career wins at Richmond, which are tied for the second-most of any active driver. His 8.7 average finishing position ranks third on that list and is his second-best average finish at any track where he\u2019s raced at least three times, behind only a 7.7 mark at Darlington Raceway. Larson has three career pole awards and two wins at the short track with a 10.8 average finishing position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also the two most recent winners of the spring race at Richmond. Hamlin won the 2022 spring event, and Larson took home the most recent trophy in April for his first win of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Denny Hamlin passes William Byron late for first win of the season in Richmond | NASCAR\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dMTWZgj5Kb8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A spot in the 16-driver playoff field is already assured for both drivers since they each have a pair of regular-season wins with five races left before the postseason begins at Darlington on Sept. 3. Playoff seeding will be their primary focus at this point in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin currently holds a 14-13 edge in playoff-point totals, although Larson reminded reporters after the Pocono race that he would have an additional 10 playoff points had Hamlin not wrecked him for both of the No. 11 car\u2019s victories this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my eyes, I mean, hey, I could have 10 more playoff points, two more wins right now if not for the 11,\u201d Larson said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/news-media\/2023\/07\/23\/cup-series-2023-kyle-larson-pocono-raceway-finish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASCAR.com<\/a>. \u201cSo yeah, I\u2019m pissed. I should be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamlin also sits third in the points standings and would receive eight bonus playoff points if he holds that position through the remainder of the regular season.
