The teams head into the season with high expectations, led by veteran quarterbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After spending 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers takes over the reins of a struggling Jets offense. The four-time MVP replaces a struggling Zach Wilson and gives the Jets some postseason aspirations. In Cleveland, Deshaun Watson looks to put a full season together as the Browns starter. Watson was suspended for 11 games last year for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/deshaun-watson-attorney-accuses-22-plaintiffs-lying-sexual-misconduct-allegations\/\">violating the NFL's conduct policy.<\/a> He hopes to play his first full season with the Browns this year, although he won't see action Thursday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deshaun-watson-and-aaron-rodgers-are-expected-to-be-out-thursday\">Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers are expected to be out Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Browns Insider Mary Kay Cabot on the Big Deshaun Watson Expectations in 2023 | The Rich Eisen Show\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x2M4Cj8v5-U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It's not uncommon for stars to sit out preseason games. Rodgers hasn't played in one since 2018. Jets coach Robert Saleh announced Rodgers, along with many starters, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-aaron-rodgers-playing-in-the-hall-of-fame-game\/\">won't play in Thursday's game.<\/a> Last year's starter Zach Wilson will start. Wilson has struggled mightily in his two NFL seasons after the Jets selected him with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson won't play either. He will be sidelined so the Browns can watch No. 3 quarterback Kellen Mond and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson show their stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mond was a third-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, but the Vikings waived him just before the start of the 2022 season. One day after his release, the Browns claimed him. On Thursday, he'll get his chance to make an impression on the Browns in game action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKellen\u2019s done a great job,\u201d Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/browns-jets-kellen-mond-deshaun-watson-42830901570f55ad9aec17ba419180ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Associated Press.<\/a> \u201cThere was a period of just getting to know him early in the season last year. So he\u2019s done everything we\u2019ve asked him to do. I\u2019ve been very impressed with him both in the meeting room and on the practice field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And the fun part for our players, as you know, is to play these games. He missed all of the 2021 season, his fifth with the Houston Texans, after roughly two dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct. This year will be his first full year of NFL action since the 2020 season, a year he led the league in passing yardage (4,826).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson is going above and beyond this preseason, putting in plenty of extra work, even when many of his teammates have already left for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there was maybe one or two guys left on the field the other day,&#8221; said Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/2023\/08\/how-much-deshaun-watson-will-run-and-why-the-defense-won-the-red-zone-browns-oc-alex-van-pelt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cleveland.com. <\/a>&#8220;That\u2019s really the guys that are great or the guys that are motivated to work until they\u2019ve finished the day and his day didn\u2019t finish when practice was over. So you want your leaders to set that example and work extra hard, especially at that position.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson has been a dual threat throughout his career, using his legs as much as his right arm to move the ball downfield. Van Pelt said he has no problem letting Watson take off when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a natural thing for him,\u201d Van Pelt said. \u201cWhen he feels that he goes, and I think that\u2019s something that\u2019s fine with us. Always encouraging him to continue through the progression. Don\u2019t skip a step and then if you get to the last part of that progression and there\u2019s nothing there, then take off.
