{"id":1575812,"date":"2023-08-17T05:55:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T09:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1575812"},"modified":"2023-08-17T05:55:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T09:55:17","slug":"fiba-world-cup-team-usa-roster-nba-global-representation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/fiba-world-cup-team-usa-roster-nba-global-representation\/","title":{"rendered":"FIBA World Cup 2023: Team USA's Roster and the NBA\u2019s Growing Global Representation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many of the NBA's approximately 500 players aren't from the United States, given the sport's growing popularity. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/who-owns-the-toronto-raptors\/\">Canada<\/a>, in particular, has a strong pool of basketball talent, and it's the same story for several European countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning on August 25, the 2023 FIBA World Cup will showcase the world's talent involved in the NBA and other leagues. Here's a look at all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/nba-players\/\">NBA players<\/a> participating and which countries they represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-2023-fiba-world-cup-how-it-works\">The 2023 FIBA World Cup: how it works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Everything you need to know about the #FIBAWC Draw 2023!\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UrcqLKfEQKs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The FIBA World Cup happens every four years. Three countries will host this year's World Cup: the Philippines, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-charles-barkley-kobe-bryant-all-appeared-japanese-game-show-played-game-needs-part-nba-all-star-weekend\/\">Japan<\/a>, and Indonesia. Thirty-two teams representing their respective countries will participate. The games start on August 25 and conclude on September 10.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other World Cups, the 32 teams are split into eight groups of four. The top two teams in each group will move on to the second stage. They'll be divided into four groups of four based on how they performed in the earlier stages. The top two teams in each group will then go to the finals, where there's a single-elimination tournament to determine the winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Team USA is in Group C &#8212; the same group as Jordan, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/antetokounbros-academy-set-up-by-giannis-antetokounmpo-his-brothers\/\">Greece<\/a>, and New Zealand. Generally, Team USA dominates international competitions, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-joined-dream-team-1-reason-wasnt-win-gold\/\">since the Dream Team<\/a> formed. As far as the FIBA World Cup goes, Team USA has won gold five times. The most recent win happened in 2014. The last World Cup, in 2019, was disappointing for Team USA as they finished seventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-team-usa-is-stacked-with-basketball-talent\">Team USA is stacked with basketball talent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Team USA vs Slovenia Full Game Highlights - 2023 FIBA World Cup | August 12, 2023\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_P5a497PPTE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps reminiscent of the Redeem Team, talented athletes stack this year's Team USA roster, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/fiba-world-cup-roster-tracker-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBA.com<\/a>. A lot of great NBA players are on the squad, with many young faces too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jaren Jackson Jr.<\/strong> of the Grizzlies won the Defensive Player of the Year award, and he'll have a big role on the squad. <strong>Anthony Edwards<\/strong>, the Timberwolves' first overall pick, is another great player who's bound for success. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/which-nba-players-other-players-no-interest-fighting-36-year-old-black-belt-tops-list\/\"><strong>Bobby Portis<\/strong><\/a> is the only champ on the squad, and he'll likely be good, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nets' <strong>Mikal Bridges<\/strong> and <strong>Cameron Johnson<\/strong>, the Knicks' <strong>Jalen Brunson<\/strong> and <strong>Josh Hart<\/strong>, and the Pelicans' <strong>Brandon Ingram<\/strong> will provide some high-level talent. Some of the younger players on the team include <strong>Paolo Banchero<\/strong> of the Magic, <strong>Tyrese Haliburton<\/strong> of the Pacers, <strong>Walker Kessler<\/strong> of the Jazz, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/austin-reaves-contract-sharpshooter-x-factor-vs-grizzlies-beyond\/\"><strong>Austin Reaves<\/strong><\/a> of the Lakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Cup will be played with FIBA rules, which are different from NBA rules. As such, it's hard to say how this squad of great NBA players will perform. The best example may be Slovenia's <strong>Luka Doncic<\/strong>. Slovenia is not expected to go far, but Doncic is already one of the best players in the NBA. He'll likely do his best to carry his team as far as possible. Superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/giannis-antetokounmpo-almost-abruptly-retired-signing-historic-228-million-contract\/\"><strong>Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/strong><\/a> is on Greece's roster, but unfortunately, he won't play due to injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada and Germany are two non-American teams to look out for. Canada has a long list of great NBA players, including <strong>Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/strong>, <strong>Jamal Murray<\/strong>, and <strong>Dillon Brooks<\/strong>.
