They dominated the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/boston-celtics\">Boston Celtics<\/a> through the first three-plus games of the 1984 NBA Finals but had nothing to show for it. After watching his team get blown out in Game 3, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/larry-bird\">Larry Bird<\/a> ripped his teammates in the locker room. He called them &#8220;sissies&#8221; and challenged them to toughen up for Game 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kevin-mchale-explained-why-his-clotheslining-of-kurt-rambis-in-1984-wasnt-a-planned-attack\/\">Kevin McHale famously clotheslined Kurt Rambis<\/a> in the third quarter with LA in front 76-70. The hard foul completely changed the momentum of the game. Boston went on to win in overtime and outlasted the Lakers in seven games. They nearly headed back to Los Angeles down 2-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lakers held a 113-111 lead and had possession of the ball with 18 seconds left in the game. James Worthy lofted a cross-court pass intended for Byron Scott that was <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/gerald-hendersons-game-2-steal-saved-day-series-1984-finals-boston-celtics-championship-history-moment-no-16\/\">intercepted by Celtics guard Gerald Henderson.<\/a> Henderson converted the steal into a game-tying layup, and the Celtics pulled out a victory in overtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series shifted to LA for Game 3, and the Lakers dominated that one from the start. They cruised to a 137-104 win, prompting Bird to lay into his teammates after the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to fight every teammate I had after Game 3,\u201d said Bird, quoted in Jackie MacMullan\u2019s book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Larry-Johnson-Earvin-Macmullan-Jackie\/dp\/B0044FCSYI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>When the Game Was Ours<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI did everything I could in the papers to get them fired up, and I knew if something didn\u2019t change, we were going to lose. So I called them sissies, told them they played like girls. I didn\u2019t know if there would be some backlash, but I didn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Game 4, the Lakers held a 76-70 lead in the third quarter before <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kevin-mchale-clotheslined-kurt-rambis-in-the-1984-nba-finals-and-may-have-gotten-a-little-assistance-from-danny-ainge\/\">McHale clotheslined Rambis<\/a> on a play that disrupted the flow of the Lakers.
