His output broke teammate Larry Bird's previous mark of 53 points. McHale's record lasted all of nine days as Bird scored 60 against the Atlanta Hawks. Former <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/boston-celtics\">Boston Celtics<\/a> guard Dennis Johnson used that moment to show the difference between Bird and McHale when it came to having that killer instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kevin-mchale-saw-his-scoring-mark-quickly-erased-by-larry-bird\">Kevin McHale saw his scoring mark quickly erased by Larry Bird<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Larry Bird&#039;s LEGENDARY 60 Point Game\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uJ__yWoq-lo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kevin McHale was in a rhythm. In that game against the Pistons in 1985, he made 22 of 28 of his shots from the floor in a 138-129 victory. The game was never in doubt, and McHale took himself out with roughly three minutes to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe points just kept piling up and I kept getting the ball in good situations and scoring it,\u201d McHale said, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/video\/relive-kevin-mchales-56-point-215230653.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo Sports.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cBefore you knew it, I looked up on the board back at the old Garden, and they had the runner in the back that said \u2018new Celtics\u2019 team record\u2019 and I was like \u2018Wow. I didn\u2019t even know I was capable.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-birds-prediction-came-true-9-days-after-kevin-mchale-set-a-boston-celtics-scoring-record\/\">Larry Bird then made a prediction.<\/a> He congratulated his teammate, but then said he should've gone for more points. He said 56 wouldn't be enough to keep that record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c(McHale) had about three or four minutes to go in the game, and we were up by a pretty good margin, and he asked the coach to take him out,\u201d Bird said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/video\/relive-kevin-mchales-56-point-215230653.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a> \u201cI happened to be standing there, and I told him he better go for 60 because 56 is not enough, that will be broken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine days later, Bird put up 60 points in a game against the Hawks that took place in New Orleans. Bird's performance that night even had <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-was-so-hot-against-atlanta-hawks-players-got-fined-for-cheering-him-on\/\">players on the Hawks bench in awe<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a lot of guys on that team who could get hot like that,\u201d McHale told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2021\/05\/04\/sports\/unstoppable-unforgettable-recalling-larry-birds-60-point-night-1985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Boston Globe<\/a>. \u201cAnd when a guy got hot, we\u2019d get him the ball. Both wanted to win, and both made plenty of sacrifices in order to do so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Celtics teammate Dennis Johnson said the way everything played out with Bird quickly breaking McHale's record showed the difference between the two when it came to having a killer instinct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We talked about it afterwards,&#8221; Johnson said, per Jackie MacMullan's book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Larry-Johnson-Earvin-Macmullan-Jackie\/dp\/B0044FCSYI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>When the Game Was Ours<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;Larry didn't understand why Kevin didn't go for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When Larry had his foot on someone's throat, he crushed them. Kevin was the kind of person who would say, &#8216;Aw, he's already down.
