The Celtics were on their way to a game against the Chicago Bulls and were sitting in their bus that never moved<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/robert-parish-had-no-problem-accepting-the-challenge-of-replacing-boston-celtics-favorite-dave-cowens\/\">. Veteran center Dave Cowens<\/a> asked head coach Bill Fitch to step off the bus so he could have a word with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they returned to the bus, Cowens was no longer a member of the team. He abruptly retired, shocking many players, especially second-year star <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/larry-bird\">Larry Bird.<\/a> When he heard the news, Bird turned his head, looked directly at newcomer Robert Parish and delivered a brief, but stern, message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-bird-was-shocked-at-the-abrupt-retirement-of-dave-cowens\">Larry Bird was shocked at the abrupt retirement of Dave Cowens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Passing the Torch PART 2: Grant Williams and Dave Cowens\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/two7XKsklU8?start=207&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Boston Celtics were fresh off a season in which they won an NBA-best 61 games, 32 more than the previous year. Larry Bird played a big part in that turnaround, earning Rookie of the Year honors after averaging 21.3 points and 10.4 rebounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although in his ninth season, Cowens was still plenty effective, putting up 14.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. That's what made <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-admitted-dave-cowens-retirement-shook-me-up-and-then-he-watched-pete-maravich-walk-away-the-same-year\/\">Cowens' retirement news so shocking.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"par-6_69\">\u201cWe were sitting on the bus, waiting to leave for a game with the Chicago Bulls in Evansville,\u201d Bird said in his book <em>Drive: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/drive-larry-bird\/1112313565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Story of My Life<\/a><\/em>. \u201cAfter a while, it seemed as if we should have left already, and people were saying, \u2018Come on, let\u2019s go.\u2019 Then Dave walked on the bus and asked Coach Fitch to come outside so he could have a word with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"par-7_43\">\u201cWe still didn\u2019t have a clue. Dave gets on the bus and says, \u2018I\u2019ve got to tell you something.\u2019 Then he proceeds to make a speech. Dave says, \u2018I want to wish you luck, but I think it\u2019s time for me to retire.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An undersized center, Cowens may be the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-dave-cowens-the-most-underappreciated-boston-celtics-player-ever\/\">most underappreciated Celtics player ever.<\/a> At 6-foot-9, he had to square off against much bigger and more physical players throughout his career. He more than held his own, helping the Celtics to a pair of championships. Cowens was also the NBA's MVP during the 1972-73 season after averaging 20.5 points and 16.2 rebounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-as-soon-as-bird-heard-the-news-he-turned-to-parish\">As soon as Bird heard the news, he turned to Parish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ROBERT PARISH | 75 Stories \ud83d\udc8e\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KH2w-fV-6i4?start=40&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the 1979-80 season, the Celtics <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bob-mcadoo-played-just-20-games-for-the-boston-celtics-but-his-value-to-the-team-was-sky-high\/\">held the top pick in the 1980 NBA Draft<\/a> from a previous trade. They traded that pick, along with the 13th selection, to the Golden State Warriors. In return, the Celtics received Robert Parish and the No. 3 pick. With that third pick, they selected Kevin McHale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Cowens gone, the Celtics needed an instant contribution from Parish. Seated three rows ahead of Parish on the bus, Bird turned around and addressed Parish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You better get into shape,&#8221; Bird said, per Jackie MacMullan's book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Larry-Johnson-Earvin-Macmullan-Jackie\/dp\/B0044FCSYI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>When the Game Was Ours<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was a little mad. I thought we had a great team with Dave. But without him? Robert wasn't ready. And Kevin? Who knew, really?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parish knew he was out of shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCoach Fitch set the mindset during training camp,\u201d Parish said during a 2020 appearance on\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxrHz-A51uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Cedric Maxwell Podcast<\/a><\/em>. \u201cToughest training camp I\u2019ve ever been in.\u00a0I was out of shape,\u00a0and I\u2019ll be the first to admit that because I did not prepare properly. Oooh, it was grueling.
