Carson Wentz to Start for Vikings Against Bills Following Kyler Murray Injury

The Minnesota Vikings are turning to a veteran presence under center for their upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz is set to take the reins for the Minnesota Vikings when they face the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed the quarterback change during a Thursday afternoon media session, revealing that Kyler Murray has been sidelined by a hamstring strain. The team currently considers Murray's recovery timeline to be week-to-week.

Murray Sidelined for the Second Time

This upcoming absence marks another frustrating pause in Murray's campaign. He previously missed the second week of the season after sustaining a concussion during Minnesota's opening game. Before this latest lower-body setback, Murray had accumulated 1,022 yards through the air, tossing five touchdowns against three interceptions. He also contributed 167 yards on the ground, maintaining a 64.9 percent completion rate and an 86.6 passer rating.

With Murray unavailable for the Monday night matchup, Max Brosmer is slated to dress as the primary backup behind Wentz.

O'Connell Confident in Veteran Presence

Stepping in for his second starting nod of the current campaign, Wentz is preparing for his seventh overall start since joining the franchise two years ago. In limited action spanning two appearances this year, the veteran has been highly efficient. He has thrown for 276 yards and three scores without committing a single turnover, boasting a 106.4 passer rating and a 59.0 percent completion rate.

O'Connell expressed strong belief in his replacement quarterback's ability to manage the game effectively.

"We have so much confidence in Wentz," O'Connell said. "He's going to throw a lot of completions. He's going to put the ball in play. He's got such a high, high understanding of not only the offense, but what he's looking at on the other side. He's got 100 games of experience."

The head coach emphasized that the team's offensive expectations remain high despite the injury.

"He's the perfect guy in a moment where you can't have Kyler out there at full strength to go in there, and we feel very strongly about when Carson's in there, we're going to get really effective quarterback play," O'Connell added.

Searching for Offensive Balance

The quarterback switch arrives at a crucial juncture for the 6-1 Vikings. The team is looking to bounce back from a narrow 19-15 divisional defeat on the road against the Detroit Lions, which ruined their undefeated streak.

Minnesota's early-season success has been heavily reliant on a dominant defensive unit. They currently pace the NFL by allowing just 13.3 points per contest, while yielding the second-fewest total yards at 271.6 per game. Conversely, the offensive unit has sputtered significantly.

Heading into the matchup with Buffalo, the Vikings sit near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories. They rank 31st in passing with 165.6 yards per game and 29th in total offense at 279.4 yards per game. Scoring has also been a struggle, as they average 20.0 points to rank 27th overall, supplemented by a rushing attack that generates 113.9 yards weekly for a 17th-place ranking.
