Colts Command High Price for Jonathan Taylor Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline
As the NFL trade deadline approaches on Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts are commanding the market's attention. Following their recent trade of offensive lineman Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, the Colts are now setting a massive asking price for 28-year-old running back Jonathan Taylor, forcing interested teams to weigh steep draft compensation.
Colts Demand Premium Draft Capital
The market for Jonathan Taylor is currently defined by Indianapolis's high valuation. It remains unconfirmed whether the Colts are fully committed to moving the star running back, but the asking price is undeniably steep. An NFL executive noted the uncertainty, stating,
"No one is sure if Indy is serious about trading him. What they want is an extraordinarily high price."
According to reports, the required draft capital could be massive, with one rumor stating,
"I heard they wanted a first in the package."Other evaluations center around the benchmark set in 2022, when the Carolina Panthers traded Christian McCaffrey to San Francisco in exchange for second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-round picks.
The New York Giants really want Taylor badly, but matching a McCaffrey-style haul presents a logistical challenge. The Giants do not possess a fourth- or fifth-round pick in next year's draft. If the asking price remains insurmountable, the Giants might pivot to Tennessee's Tony Pollard as a Plan B.
Seahawks Pivot After Quenton Nelson Trade
The Seattle Seahawks have already engaged in business with the Colts, successfully acquiring Quenton Nelson for third- and fifth-round picks. Despite giving up that draft capital, Seahawks general manager John Schneider said the Seahawks could still make a move before Tuesday's trade deadline.
However, Seattle is likely out of the mix for Taylor's services. The Seahawks currently boast a healthy first-round pick in Jadarian Price, along with Zach Charbonnet returning to the backfield. A scout observing the current trade landscape noted,
"They know they’ve got an opportunity"as teams look to finalize their rosters for the postseason push.
Broader Deadline Landscape
As the deadline nears, the value of elite running backs remains a focal point across the league. John Harbaugh highlighted the impact of top-tier talent in the backfield, stating,
"I would love for us to be in that kind of a circumstance — a Derrick Henry circumstance or a Saquon Barkley circumstance."
Beyond the running back market, other notable storylines remain unresolved. The eventual landing spot for Josh Downs is still uncertain, while the Dallas Cowboys are evaluating whether they will land one of the standout pass rushers currently available.
With Tuesday closing in, the league waits to see if any franchise will meet the Colts' demands for Taylor, or if Indianapolis will retain him for the rest of the season.
