William Contreras named World Series MVP as Brewers beat Rays
William Contreras was named World Series MVP after leading the Milwaukee Brewers past the Tampa Bay Rays. Milwaukee won Game 5, 4-1, to capture its first championship.
William Contreras World Series MVP honors went to the Milwaukee Brewers catcher after Milwaukee beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 to win the World Series. The victory sealed the first championship in Brewers franchise history.
Contreras was central to the title run on both sides of the ball. He finished the Series 8-for-21, hit .381 with four RBI and helped guide a pitching staff that held Tampa Bay to 12 runs in five games.
Contreras delivers in the clincher
The 28-year-old catcher went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the clinching Game 5 win. It capped a World Series in which he was Milwaukee’s most productive and steady presence at the plate.
His Fall Classic performance continued a strong October. Contreras finished the postseason with a .373/.448/.588 slash line, three homers and nine RBIs, making him Milwaukee’s most consistent hitter during its run to the title.
The Brewers went 11-2 in the postseason, including a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series before closing out Tampa Bay in five games.
Defense and game-calling strengthened his MVP case
Contreras’ value was not limited to his bat. He threw out four runners during the World Series, including three in the first three games. That made him the first catcher to do that since Phillies catcher Darren Daulton in 1993.
He also had 10 successful ABS challenges in the Series, adding to his impact behind the plate. With Contreras catching, Milwaukee’s staff limited the Rays to 12 runs across five games.
That combination of offense, throwing and staff management gave Contreras a complete MVP case in a series controlled by Milwaukee.
A historic honor for a Venezuelan catcher
Contreras is the first catcher to win World Series MVP since Salvador Pérez in 2015. He is also the third Venezuelan to win the award, following Pérez and San Francisco’s Pablo Sandoval in 2012.
The honor capped a standout year for Contreras. During the regular season, he hit .270 with 18 homers, 94 RBIs and a .758 OPS in 147 games.
He also won the World Baseball Classic for Venezuela in March, playing four games in the tournament. Pérez started the final at catcher as Venezuela beat the United States 3-2 in Miami for its first WBC title. Contreras’ brother, Willson Contreras, was also on the roster.
Brewers end their long championship wait
Milwaukee’s Game 5 win gave the Brewers the championship that had eluded the franchise. Their only previous World Series ended in a seven-game loss to St. Louis in 1982.
This time, the Brewers finished the job with an 11-2 postseason and an MVP performance from their catcher. Contreras’ bat, defense and leadership of the pitching staff made him the defining player of Milwaukee’s breakthrough World Series.
