Brandon Aiyuk Files for Reinstatement Amid 49ers Contract Dispute
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has officially filed for reinstatement to the NFL and plans to report to the team's facility on Friday. Guided by newly hired agent Drew Rosenhaus, the 28-year-old is seeking a return from the reserve/left squad list following a prolonged contract and roster dispute with the franchise.
Agent Change Prompts Action
The move to file for reinstatement comes on the heels of a major shift in Aiyuk's representation. Amid his long-running standoff with the 49ers, the wide receiver dismissed his former agent, Ryan Williams, and hired Rosenhaus to navigate the next phase of his career.
Rosenhaus stated on Wednesday that Aiyuk's paperwork has officially been submitted to the NFL. Upon reinstatement by the league, Aiyuk will remain under his current contract with San Francisco, forcing the front office to make a definitive decision regarding his roster status.
Financial Fallout and Contract Void
Aiyuk's relationship with the 49ers deteriorated significantly over the past year. After signing a four-year, $120 million extension just before the start of the 2024 season—a deal reached following a lengthy hold-in—the receiver eventually left the Niners late last season and was placed on the reserve/left squad list.
The absence carried steep financial consequences. San Francisco previously voided $27 million in guaranteed money from Aiyuk's contract for the 2026 season, citing his failure to participate in team meetings and other mandatory activities last summer.
What Happens Next for San Francisco
It has been more than two years since Aiyuk last took the field. His 2024 season was cut short by a knee injury in October of that year, limiting him to 25 catches for 374 yards in seven games. Prior to the injury, Aiyuk was a highly productive target, earning second-team All-Pro honors in the 2023 season with 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.
Since being drafted in the first round in 2020, Aiyuk has amassed 294 catches for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns. However, his future in a 49ers uniform appears virtually nonexistent. San Francisco general manager John Lynch previously stated that he does not expect Aiyuk to play for the Niners again.
Once the NFL processes the reinstatement, San Francisco will have the option to trade or release the veteran wide receiver. According to reports, an outright cut is viewed as the most likely outcome to resolve the standoff.
